The Apple Store Malaysia Phone Experience

On the 24th of December 2008, I came back from my little hiatus in Georgetown, Penang (in where I discovered the heritage and history of the city), and immediately started ringing up Apple Authorised Resellers to find out where in the blue hell, the new MacBook Air was. (Emphasis on the new, because all the resellers try to push the old one, to clear out their stock - in fact, they actively discourage you from getting the new one, saying the only modifications are the bigger hard disk, and better video card. They don’t mention the new Trackpad option in System Preferences, that leads you to four finger scrolling which allows you to bring up Expose or switch between applications - Mac+Tab).

Its constant delays, the fact that it was supposed to be out after Thanskgiving weekend, and so on, started really getting on my nerves. I had been waiting for this feather-weight laptop for a while, since the announcement.

Machines had none, and didn’t know when it was coming. EpiCentre had none, and didn’t know when it was coming. So I thought I’d take a chance at calling up the Apple Store Malaysia at 1800-80-6419. They even advertise saying things like “Kami juga berinteraksi dalam Bahasa Malaysia!”, which I loosely translate as “We can interact in Bahasa Malaysia too!”.

I get someone who barely speaks any English. But she has an accent. I ask her why they don’t sell any Air’s, and the fact that Christmas is tomorrow, how am I supposed to make my loved ones happy? She tells me she has no idea why and EpiCentre is the best place to ask. If they don’t have it, no one else will.

I say I will come into their office to pick a unit up. They tell me that that is not possible, they’re not Apple Retail. I say I know where such an office exists (I’ve vaguely remembered it from eons ago), and then she tells me she’s in *drumroll* Singapore.

So there, Apple’s support line for Malaysia routes to Singapore, and they’re generally not very helpful. And apparently, their QA on language skills is just not there. In fact, had I started off a conversation with her in Bahasa Malaysia, I have a feeling she wouldn’t have survived - Mandarin, maybe.

As an aside, EpiCentre in Pavillion had a couple of units available on 30/12/2008. I think as of today, they have one unit available… Go, go, rush to get ‘em :-)

Remotely Start and Stop Applications or Services over the Internet

There are so many things we can do in a computer. One of my favorite is running FTP service so I can access my files whenever I am. However, due to security reasons, I do not leave the FTP port 21 open all the time. I only turn it on when I am going somewhere and I need to access my files from there. I do that to avoid chances of hackers breaking in (either using bruteforce cracking or exploit) to my FTP to steal my data. It is safe, but troublesome and sometimes I even forget to enable the FTP service when I really needed it. There are times I even forget to disable the service and left it running for weeks!

That is only ONE service we’re talking about. What if you have many other service such as VNC, Telnet, RDP, HTTP, P2P, and etc? You’d be leaving so many ports open and hackers could take their time trying to discover any way to break in your computer through all those open ports. Here is a nice tool that we can use to remotely start programs, stop services, manage processes, uninstall software and etc over the Internet. This can actually be done if you can remotely access the computer using VNC, Remote Desktop Connection, LogMeIn and etc but the difference is this application has stealth mode which is possible to hide from all kind of port scanners.

The A-A-S Application Access Server is a free tool that makes the PC administration possible over LAN and WANs. With the built-in “Stealth Mode” it allows the PC administration possible without port scanner notice the host service. The control is carried out over a built-in HTML server. All you need is a HTML browser such as IE or Firefox on the client side.

application access server

There is a configuration setting where you can set the maximum amount of wrong logins. Once a user has reached the maximum simultaneously wrong logins, the user will be blacklisted and can never access the server even if he has the right password. The only way for the user to get back on the server is for restart the AAS server again.

Application Access Server Features:

  • Integrated HTML server
  • Control over a standard browser
  • Start from predefined applications.
  • Shows system information
  • System tasks: show and kill
  • Services: show, pause, run, stop
  • Show Eventlog
  • Wake-On-LAN
  • Software management
  • You can run the A-A-S as service or foreground program
  • Run your own undefined applications over the Internet
  • Set user restriction for each feature of the AAS
  • With the “Stealth mode” it is possible to hide the AAS for all kind of port scanners
  • Should there be a dictionary brute force attack, the aggressor is put on a “black list” and he got never an access even if he has the right password.
  • An access control list enables that only registered computers can be logged in.
  • You can start the AAS over the command line automatically and minimize
  • Detailed logs
  • Below is a screenshot showing that I can start and stop DHCP server, launch notepad with maximized window, and Winamp as minimized, only by using Internet Explorer or your favorite web brower. There are a lot more I can add to the list from the Application section in Configurations. Other than that, I can also give rights to users that can start/stop an application.
    Starting a service

The Silent and Stealth port mode offers better security for AAS. The silent port mode causes the A-A-S to react only if you entered the correct port keyword at the end of the URL. An example: http://192.168.1.2:6262/KeywordHere. If you only enter the IP address and port, you’d get only a blank page. As for stealth mode, the only way for you to access the AAS server is through AAS_Login.exe, a portable login tool for AAS.

    Networked multi-function printers/scanner recommendations

I just never have the luck with network printers. My purchase last year (yes, hello 2009) was a HP LaserJet M1522nf MFP - its a network printer with fax/copying/printing/scanning capabilities.

What annoys me about it is that in Fedora 8, I could only print via the network - there was no way I could scan via the network. The story unfortunately, is similar on Mac OS X - the HP Scan application only works when the USB dongle is connected, which kind of defeats the purpose of a networked multi-function device. In Microsoft Windows land however, one can scan via the network!

Is there a multi-function device, that is a laser printer, and is affordable, that allows one to print and scan via the network on Linux and Mac OS X? I just want to de-clutter in 2009.

I love you.

喜喜则是招手叫爸爸回头:“Daddy, come, let me give you a hug.”

An interview with Joshua Steinberg (part II)

Continuing the interview from part I:

PD: What are your personal favorite PDA software - medical and non-medical?
JS: That’s easy! The stuff that I use constantly, which work, and which provide helpful medical info, that’s the stuff I like the most. Probably like everyone else, I use ePocrates, the free version. Right up there is STAT Cholesterol. I do not believe one can treat cholesterol for primary and secondary prevention of heart attacks without calculating Framingham cardiac risk. This is the difference between disease oriented and patient oriented, evidence based practice. I don’t care about cholesterol, I care about risk of heart attack and preventing those heart attacks. STAT Cholesterol looks at all the risk factors, calculates a risk, and allows me to have a patient-centered discussion with my patient about treatment options. I probably use it more than ePocrates. Next is Tim Allen’s OB Wheel, fantastic for its simplicity and value in obstetric care, can’t do squat in OB without carefully determining due date, so it all starts with his outstanding product (and the Bishop score he included is an added gem of a bonus). Next is Essential Evidence Plus, which used to be called InfoRetriever. It is a massive searchable database of nothing but evidence based resources and calculators — all of Cochrane, all of JFP POEMs (patient oriented evidence that matters), all of National Guidelines Clearinghouse. Love Shots2008, an indispensable resource for anyone who gives shots, especially anyone who takes care of children needing shots. I actually broke down and bought the Sanford ABX Guide, my only non-free software app, but I’ve never found a truly great ID/ABX resource, all are good, none are great. Then I have Up-To-Date, free since I was a beta-tester for the Palm version! Fantastic resource, but does anyone want to read long tracts of medical info on a tiny screen? I get Up-To-Date access at work on big PC screens, so I don’t use my Palm version much. And with modesty aside for a moment, I really like and use my programs — and that’s why I put 20-30 hours into each making them! I use PreOp Eval all the time when I do medical clearance before surgery, likewise I use Pneumonia to check the definitions of hospital acquired pneumonia for the tricky cases and indicated w/up tips.

Non-medical software… is there non-medical software? Ok, ok, I’ve played 8889 games of Klondike solitaire on Sol Free (and counting). But the rest is the Palm PIM stuff which I think is great as-is. I use Pics&Videos to carry pictures of my son with me everywhere. I use Tasks for grocery store lists, lists of medical topics I need to brush up on, lists of movies and books I want to get to, lists of everything. I use Memos to keep track of what the proper billing E&M codes are for hospital stuff like a vaginal delivery, a med consult, a 23 hour observation, etc. And my Contacts list is my lifeline to staying connected to everyone else, all my friends, all my family, all my partners, all my residents, all my consultants, all the take-out Indian food places, and ditto goes for managing my entire schedule with Calendar. Come to think of it, Calendar is probably my #1 most important Palm app, right up there with Contacts.

PD: What do you hope to see with regards to Palm’s pending release of the Nova platform and new devices?

I hope to see viability and resurgence! That’s it, really, I’m not hot for any special new features. If my Treo 680 had an awesome battery life, free 3G data service, and AM/FM radio reception for when I go running, it would be PERFECT, yes, perfect… for me. (I don’t even have data service on my Treo, I don’t need the e-mail and I don’t want to surf the web on a 2×2″ screen, and most of all I don’t want to pay!) I think the Palm OS is still fine as-is from a medical PDA user point of view. But the typical consumer wants accelerometers, streaming app stores, video conferencing, and probably aromatherapy, too, so I see the slick appeal of iPhone. And I know that developers have complained for years that Palm OS is busting at the seams of what it can handle, and I guess that’s important so that those developers can continue to bring us great things which keep the Palm OS platform thriving. Oh, wait, I am a developer. So easy to forget when I’m just an amateur. I certainly have no dreams of making the Palm OS old or new do dazzling things, I’m just a small-time medical app maker.

PD: Do you see potential in the trend towards cloud computing versus stand alone software?

JS: I don’t know enough to see the pros, cons, potential, need, etc. “Cloud computing” is me sitting here on a Saturday morning working on a programming project in the second cloudiest city in the country, Binghamton! Concrete gray skies from November through March, same as Syracuse. What was I thinking…

PD: Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of writing their own medical software?

JS: Sure. Go for it. However, since it will be a difficult steep learning curve no matter what route you choose, ask yourself some questions first. Has anyone else programmed what you have in mind? If so, don’t bother. Is there any other way of putting the info you want on your Palm PDA, such as using Docs-to-Go to hold key guidelines and PDF’s? If so, don’t bother. Is the info you need simple enough to memorize? If so, don’t bother. Is the info you need soooo rarely used that you’d be better off just looking something up elsewhere when you need it? If so, don’t bother. Is the info you need so trivial that it doesn’t matter whether you get it right or not, relying on memory? If so, don’t bother. So to turn this around from what not to program to what I do recommend be programmed, I do have criteria. My criteria for projects that I take on to benefit me, my residents, and my physician colleagues everywhere, are that the subject is too complex to memorize effectively, too commonly used/needed to keep looking it up, and too important for just guessing at mgmt (”winging it”) and hoping that it works out. Come to think of it, these are strikingly similar to the “relevance criteria” (patient-oriented, common, impact practice) that I use/teach in information mastery style evidence based medicine! Not surprising, they’re good criteria.

Josh is a man of many words ;) and has more to say, especially on his programming philosophy and upcoming projects:

I read a nice article a few years ago which outlined four dimensions of scholarly activity. The first is creation of new knowledge. That’s the sexy one which wins fame, fortune, NIH grants, and all that. I am not a research-doing kinda guy, I doubt I will ever contribute to the world by discovery and creation of new knowledge. But the other three dimensions of scholarly activity give me opportunities. Second is application of knowledge, third is dissemination of knowledge, and fourth is organization/archiving/preserving knowledge. By teaching students and residents one-on-one, by writing the rare publication explaining evidence, I am disseminating knowledge. Medical care won’t improve a bit from all the discovered/created new knowledge if no one figures out how to fit it into practical everyday practice and how to bring the information to the masses. I see programming for PDA’s as fitting into this. You may note that I do not really make programs that just give an answer, such as “cleared for surgery”. Instead I make programs which walk clinicians through thinking and evaluation processes to arrive at answers and, just as importantly, to teach the process itself. One of my current projects is very much about teaching process as much as yielding clinical answers.

Third, that brings me to my three new projects. One is done and posted for distribution/download, and the others are about to be.

    1) PEWS. My hospital has implemented a pediatric severity-of-illness score which has had profound impact on the rate of preventable non-ICU arrests at Cinci Children’s Hospital. I wanted my residents to have the scoring system, evaluation tool, and action protocol in their PDA’s, so I wrote it. It is posted for free sharing at

    http://fmdrl.org/index.cfm?event=c.beginBrowseD#Search+steinberg
and it should be posted at www.freewarepalm.com soon.

    2) EFM glossary. ACOG (American College Ob & Gyn) put out new definitions of terms in Sept ‘08 for electronic fetal monitoring patterns. I programmed a little reference so that my residents (and this forgetful evidence-based attending who doesn’t like to use continuous electronic fetal monitoring during labor for low risk patients) can easily remember the details and do electronic fetal monitoring well. It will be posted at FMDRL and FreewarePalm when I get the final permission from ACOG’s publisher who owns the intellectual property rights.

    3) … story first. I had an ABG a couple weeks ago while running the resident hospital service. I was mortified how unconfident I felt interpreting the ABG and acid-base status of the patient. There are at least two ABG interpretation tools that I know of on Palm’s, but they just spit out an answer (not necessarily the right full answer either), so I can’t scrutinize that answer for accuracy, nor does the answer teach anything about getting better at the skill. So I decided to tackle creating the tool that I want folks to have, one that provides answers and teaches the topic. My reading on the topic has taken me as far back as the medical literature of the 1970’s (which one cannot often get online, yikes!), and the programming of the topic has taken me a little farther beyond the limits of my previous skills. But the result is, I think, great! “ABG Acid-Base” is now at version 0.9, a beta version for sure. I’m testing it both for design and clinical accuracy currently. I’d be grateful if you took a look. I’m attaching it. I’ll post it for distribution real soon, either in beta 0.9 or else the first 1.0 release at my usual spots, FMDRL and FreewarePalm.

Josh also has a tip to share about the Hopkin’s ABX Guide:

It appears that the Johns Hopkins ABX guide has gone back to being free. Feb. 1, 2008, it shifted from free to paid subscription. I clicked on the Hopkins PDA site looking for HIV tools when I noticed the ABX guide has gone back to being free again. Don’t know why, but now is the time to download before they charge money again! I never completely liked the Hopkins ABX guide, but I never liked the Sanford one either. The Sanford paper version is still the best, oddly enough, in my humble meaningless opinion!

Thanks a whole bunch to Josh for taking the time to share with us his PDA journey. Next up we’ll be publishing an email interview we conducted with Andre “Statcoder” Chen!

Like every of us, my girl module yet hit to encounter the unexceptionable take of hostility that gild module tolerate.  I institute that conflict is acceptable.  Fighting and using a instrument is not.  It is titled attack with a noxious instrument and is illegal by law.  The certainty of children throwing blows at edifice is alright with me.  It is the decrement to that identify of hostility that frightens me.

Here is an example.  In 1968 the adornment MC5 herb the song, “Kick discover the jams.”  The inaugural distinction in the strain was, “Kick discover the jams mother@#&%*s!”

In 1968, this caused a Brobdingnagian up roar.  Can you envisage if this medium had been free today.  That was the exclusive declare articulate in the whole album, but is was THE digit to many.  Today grouping are insensitive to this category of language.  I would be selection to look that you hit at small 5 CDs that utilised that articulate repeatedly.

Not exclusive has the module practice denaturized but it seems that the conflict that I talked most early has presented artefact to armament battles on the playground.

So, the saucer is when we are no individual phased by the rising of hostility then it starts to embellish acknowledged and easier to do. That category of comfy relation with murder and guts is never good.

    FC NFS ISCSI

There had been numbers of review and discussion always regarding the choice of storage for us to run on Virtual Environment today. I believed that the hot discussion is always moving talk about the right storage with right design and implementation to the VM farm always. The most hottest topic are still regarding the NFS, ISCSI and FC implementation which provide better features, performance and reliability.

Personally, I had 3 of it running in my environment now and of course, I had spent a huge number of times to really test out all the solution and compare apple to apple to further study my requirement. Here is some reading I get from my test for 3 solution above.

For I/O performance, I am using the IO meter as to generate the max output to the storage. I manage to get 190MB/s for my FC storage on 100 % read, and I only manage to get the output of 170MB/s on ISCSI, but on NFS, I only manage to get at 125MB/s. If we look at the number here, and compare to my high load R900 ESX host, actually it is more than enough to handle the number of VM I have in the ESX host. There are a lot of article introduce NFS, and the features of Netapps, but remember, ESX itself had improved from time to time. Thin Provisioning is no longer new thing, as you may get it with many vendor today by free as well as volume snap. But Dedupe will still be an interesting technology in netapps. If we look at FC, you will mostly lose all this technology, but it provide a stable performance as you need to virtualize some heavy environment moving forward. I am currently still test out the storage solution before I decide to go with a final choice. I will suggest to keep an eye on the technology trend as we may also remember that the VMware ESX 4 is on the way, which may change the game of storage strategy significantly.

Inconsiderate Drivers Of Cars WLC 5702 And WNY 8347

There are people who have eyes but refuse to use it to see. There are people who have ears but refuse to use it to listen. There are also people who have brains but refuse to use it to think. I crossed path with one such person yesterday. No, make that three. Here is what happened.

Jusco Taman Maluri Shopping Centre allocated a parking space wide enough to park two cars for disabled people just outside the entrance to the supermarket. The parking space is painted blue. Two signboards with the wheelchair logo were prominently placed there as well.

Inconsiderate driver of car WLC 5702 stealing parking space for disabled people at Jusco Taman Maluri Shopping Centre
Is the signboard with the wheelchair logo not obvious enough to the driver and passenger of WLC 5702?

I was waiting for Wuan at one of the parking spaces. The other was occupied by a white Kancil. A middle aged couple who had no apparent disability got into the car and drove off. As soon as the Kancil went off, another car backed into the space. The plump lady driver got out. The passenger was a middle aged man. The following conversation took place after I wound the window down to confront the driver.

Me: Excuse me, are you disabled?

    Driver: No.

She was taken aback by my question.

Me: This parking space is for disabled people. The ground is painted in a different colour.

    I pointed to the ground.

    Me: There are signboards too.

I pointed to the signboard on the passenger side of the car. She looked confused by then.

Me: If you park here then disabled people have no place else to park.

Driver: Just a short while only.

Me: Everybody says it is for a while. If you park here then where are disabled people supposed to park. These are the only places wide enough for us to get out.

She looked more confused but still defiant. Her companion waved to her and said something that was intelligle to me. She immediately locked the car and walked off. And that is how lady driver of Kia Spectra WLC 5702 became the first inductee into The Digital Awakening’s Hall of Shame.

Drivers WLC 5702 and WNY 8347 abusing parking spaces for disabled people at Jusco Taman Maluri.

When Wuan came back, I got her to take a photograph of the offending car while I backed our car out. While Wuan was snapping away, a white Kenari drove into the space vacated by me. The driver and his entire family were all non-disabled people. It had been a long day for us and I just did not have the strength left educate ignorant people on the importance of not abusing accessible parking spaces. We went off just after Wuan got the photographs that I wanted.

While I am at it, let me rant just a little more. A few months ago at the same shopping centre, I wanted to park at the same parking space. The two signboards blocked the way. Wuan got out of the car to remove the signboards. A guard came out and shouted rudely at Wuan and told her to go park somewhere else without bothering to check if there was any disabled person in the car or if there was sticker with the wheelchair logo on the windscreen.

Wuan got annoyed and shouted back at him and pointed to the wheelchair sticker on the car windscreen. The rude guard even got the nerve to tell her that she could at least told him in a polite way. He then walked away, leaving Wuan to move the two heavy signsboards by herself. That was very unlike the courteous security personnel that I have come to expect from Jusco.

It is also ridiculous for Jusco to place heavy signboards to block the parking spaces. How is a disabled driver supposed to park there? Not all disabled people travel with a companion who can get out of the car to move the signboards. In trying to prevent non-disabled people from parking their cars there, which obviously is unsuccessful, the action is also preventing disabled people from using the facility.

It is ironic that people who are genuinely disabled are not able to use parking in spaces reserved for them while non-disabled people continue to abuse such facilities with impunity. These are inconsiderate Malaysians for you. They are not the majority but they make life difficult for disabled people who are already facing so many problems with public transport and the built environment.

Recipe: Acar Hu - Nyonya Fish Pickle

Acar hu - Nyonya fish pickle.

Wuan bought some very nice ikan belanak from the wet market and decided to make acar hu with it. Acar hu, also known as acar ikan in Malay, is a popular Nyonya pickled fish dish. Wuan had made it once for me many years ago and I liked it very much. I am not too fond of ikan belanak because I am too lazy to pick out the bones. She added another two slices of ikan kurau just for me.

The following recipe is adapted from Nyonya Flavours, a Penang Straits Chinese cuisine recipe book jointly published by The State Chinese (Penang) Association and Star Publications. The step by step instructions are complemented with photographs of the process.

    Acar Hu

    Ingredients:
8 ikan belanak (chee ya hu, mullet), gutted and scaled
2 slices ikan kurau (mah yau yee, threadfin)

2 tsp salt to season fish
    Cooking oil for deep frying

    5cm fresh turmeric, thinly sliced
    100gm young ginger, finely shredded
    2 bulbs garlic, finely shredded
6 red chillies, seeded and quartered lengthwise

    5 tbsp cooking oil

    250ml rice vinegar
    1 tsp salt
    10 tbsp granulated sugar

Ikan kurau slices and ikan belanak. Remove the scales and gut the fish. Lightly rub with salt to season.

Deep fry the fish until golden. Remove from oil and set aside.

Deep fried ikan belanak and ikan kurau slices.

Young ginger, garlic, turmeric and red chilies.

Sliced garlic, sliced red chilies, shredded young ginger and sliced turmeric.

Fry turmeric slices in 5 tablespoon of oil until oil turns yellow and fragrant. Discard turmeric.

Fry garlic slices in turmeric oil until fragrant. Add shredded young ginger and continue frying until fragrant and the ginger shreds start to shrivel. Leave aside to cool.

Put the garlic and ginger in a big glass bowl. Add red chillies. Pour in rice vinegar. Add salt and sugar to taste. Keep submerged in the vinegar for at least one day before serving.

Acar hu - Nyonya fish pickle.

The acar hu is best eaten with rice. Its piquant taste is truly appetising when accompanied by the red chilli, ginger and garlic that are pickled together with it. This dish may also be therapeutic as well as turmeric and ginger can dispel wind in the body. Likewise, many other Nyonya dishes use herbs, spices and rhizomes for similar therapeutic effects besides being delicious and unique in taste.

Well, I know this thing has been a controversy for about couple of weeks now. But as far as I know, there is no objection whatsoever from the canonical about selling your own work(your own learning experiences and turn it into user guide) to help people understand and get to know Ubuntu.

So, I would like to promo one of Malaysian linux community 'Jom Linux' with their first kit which being called 'Ubuntu 8.10 Kit'. Basically, they sell this kit for only RM13.99. The price is not for the CD but they need the money for the efforts they put to create the First Ever Malay Language Ubuntu User Guide. From my reading, the User Guide book will cover on important thing such as Installation progress, basic hardware troubleshoot, desktop customization and etc. It's cheap right? Moreover, you'll receive a sticker with Ubuntu Logo and text saying 'Powered by Ubuntu' with this kit.

For those who would like to order the kit could do so by visiting this site - Tempahan Ubuntu Kit. Or if you would like to sponsor for the kit's developement cost and process, kindly download the guide on how to be a sponsor - Sponsor the Kit.

For now, this kit only sell in Malaysia. To all Malaysian, please support and make the Kit a dream come true. If I'm not mistaken this is the first time ever we are having a great user Guide written in our own language. For more info, please visit their mini site.

    Change Username Simple Way

Well, If you ever encounter this situation where you would like to rename your username from Jackson to Jack, then you will think about adding a new user with 'adduser' command. Well, what if you want to have same previlleges, same desktop customization like you have with Jackson username?

So this is a tips on how to change username in the same time, you wont have any problem with customization and previleges. In this tips, I will use 'Jackson' as old username and 'Jack' as a new username.

In this tips, you will need to boot into recovery menu and be root. Root is needed to change all files and permission because if you do login using jackson, you can never complete the steps given here. Only after booting into recovery mode you may proceed with the steps below.

First, you need to change home folder from '/home/Jackson' to '/home/Jack'.
    mv /home/Jackson /home/Jack
The next step is, you will have to change all word equal to Jackson to Jack from your 'passwd', 'shadow' and 'group' files:
    nano -B /etc/passwd
    nano -B /etc/shadow
    nano -B /etc/group
When you done changing all the files, we need to change the owner of '/home/Jack' to Jack:
    chown -R Jack:Jack /home/Jack
After everthing's done, please reboot your machine. To reboot, just type
    shutdown -r now
Happy trying. If there is any other way easier to do complete this task, please you are welcome to leave a comment, and give the URL for me to have a look.

The Legend of Chun Li (2009) movie trailer

The Japanese official trailer for “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li”, starring Kristin Kreuk, Neal McDonough, Chris Klein, Michael Clarke Duncan, Taboo Nawasha, Robin Shou and Moon Bloodgood etc…

It seems like an ok action movie if you don’t know much Street Fighter; but if you are a SF fan… you are likely to curse upside down about this.

It’s odd that they are making a movie about Chun Li but doesn’t show much of the SF elements in the film; people wouldn’t have guess that it’s a SF trailer if it’s not for the movie title… the characters and fights are just way off from the original gaming series.

The Legend of Chun Li will premier on February 27th in US and a day later in Japan.

Auditory Brainstem Implants stimulates the cognitive brain

My friend Beatrice and I were in the car yesterday when I asked her a question. She turned to me and replied with a long sentence of which I could not understand. So I asked her to say only the keywords, and she did, more slowly, but not too slow. Her hands remained on the steering wheel as she spoke. Without any deliberate facial expression or visual cues, I was able to know what the words were.

I did not actually hear any better. Her voice still sounded robotic through my Auditory Brainstem Implant. But somehow the second time around, her more relaxed and slower speech enabled a part of me to perceive the words cognitively similar to the effects of healthy sound perception but without hearing them accurately.

i used to think each channel of the multichannel electrode array of the Auditory Brainstem Implant represents a different pitch, like how we would tune string instruments. But each time Steve Otto tested the threshold with each of mine, all activated channels sounded at almost the same pitch. Although I was able to sort them out as a scale, from lowest to the highest, but they weren’t much different from each other. Only until lately did I understand that the purpose of having multiple channels was to make sure that if some causes side effects when activated, there are still others to try and use. Each channel may stimulate a different part and cause us to hear an extra pitch, but the electrodes themselves do not make pitches.

Traditionally, Cochlear Implants were designed to stimulate the middle ear Cochlear that is tonotopic. But since the acoustic nerve connecting to the cochlear is severed with acoustic tumor removal, rendering the cochlear unusable, the Auditory Brainstem Implant was created to stimulate the cochlear nuclei from the lateral recess of the fourth ventricle. This region was never designed with a tonographic map like the bassilar membrane which means pitch perception is not produced here by way of the cochlear.

This leads me to think that the human brain has evolved as a complex organ with each part having a specific task to perform. Since electrical stimulation of the cochlear gives no benefit in those without hearing nerves, we try instead to produce sound sensation in the brainstem where pitch discrimination isn’t what this specific region deals with. What use is there in trying to replicate natural hearing with something that’s not meant to work like normal hearing? It is better to look at how humans are still able to communicate and perceive the environment through electrically stimulated sound perceptions independent of natural pitches or normal understanding of sounds. How did I understand Beatrice with the A.B.I without actually hearing her words for how they were?

Levi A. Reiter, Ph.D. explained that any implants work better in people with prior speech, language, and hearing experiences. The more and better they heard prior to becoming deaf, the better their implants would perform. This suggests that Auditory Brainstem Implants are more importantly an activation tool for the cognitive brain and memory, than just a hearing aid.

Minimem Optimizes Application Memory Usage in Windows

Minimem, yet another small utility that is useful to optimize application memory usage in Windows platform only. Minimem is initially developed just to optimize memory usage of Mozilla Firefox but Minimem is able to optimize any Windows applications that is running on ancient computers (like my old laptop with less RAM).

In Minimem, you need to select the processes to be optimized from all the active processes and Minimem will automatically optimize the selected processes every X seconds without you knowing it when the overall RAM usage of the computer is low in the background. Indeed, Minimem does help me to optimize most of my daily run applications on my old laptop with 512MB of RAM running Windows XP. However, Minimem isn’t useful for applications that already have memory management of their own and computer that have large amount of memory.

Well, Minimem is a freeware utility that requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or 3.5 in Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 2003 to run. Give it a try and comments here on Minimem.

TCP-Z is the Best TCP/IP Half Open Connection Limited Patcher

When Windows XP Service Pack 2 was released, it came together with a new feature to TCP/IP in order to babysit users and “reduce the threat” of worms spreading fast without control. In one such attempt, the devs have limited the number of possible TCP connection attempts per second to 10 (from unlimited in SP1). This argumentative feature can possibly affect server and P2P programs that need to open many outbound connections at the same time.

The solution that I’ve always been using is LvlLord’s Event ID 4226 Patcher (4226 fix) to patch the TCPIP.SYS file which increases the limited of half-open (incomplete outbound) TCP connection from 10 to 50. It works well except that whenever Windows released any hotfixes that updates TCPIP.SYS, I have to repatch the file all over again. Other than that, increasing half-open TCP connection does allows you to spread the worm faster if your computer is infected by one.

The best solution I’d say a tool which I recently stumbled on called TCP-Z (No it has nothing to do with the popular CPU-Z) which can release the power of your network, download faster, and more task can be run at the same time.

I say that TCP-Z is good because there is an option to modify the limited of half-open (incomplete outbound) TCP connection by patching the memory. If you want to start P2P download via BitTorrent, just run TCP-Z, increase the half-open TCP connection and start downloading. When you shutdown the computer and restart the next time, the previously increased TCP connections will be reset to default which is 10. The memory patching takes effect immediately without rebooting the computer and doesn’t modify any system files.

    TCP-Z Event ID 4226 Patcher

Other than that, TCP-Z shows number of established connections, half open connections, Create depth, download/upload speed in real-time. It will also show the number of warnings events in per-minute, which TCP half open connection overload.

There are two methods to use TCP-Z. First is to manually run TCPZ.exe and go to Patch tab and change the settings there. Another way is to install TCP half open limited patcher in virtual device mode. Go to VirtualDevice folder inside TCPZ and run TCPZ_Setup-x86.exe if you’re running Windows 32bit or TCPZ_Setup-x64.exe if running Windows 64bit. You can then change the TCP limit from Device Manager > TCPZ Driver > TCP Half Open Limited Patcher (TCP-Z).

    TCPZ Device Manager

TCP-Z works on Windows XP SP2 & SP3/2003/2008/Vista SP1 & SP2/Windows 7, all 32bit (x86) / 64bit (x64). It does what it supposed to and most importantly it is free and portable. Since this tool is capable of patching memory and system file TCPIP.SYS, your firewall or antivirus might find that this tool as a threat. Rest assured that it is definitely safe from virus if you downloaded it from the official TCP-Z website. Since I can’t get full download speed from RapidShare, I am back to using BitTorrent and TCP-Z is really a gem!

    Nourishing weekends

Ever since becoming a stay-at-home housewife, I've grown to enjoy the days staying at home, worrying about the bills and the excess dust on the floors. I've embraced this awesome TV series called The Gem of Life, that glamorizes the PR professional's lifestyle (Ada Choi's PR Manager role in particular was close to what I used to do at TNB, all the travelling to exotic islands and tying up lose connections with media representatives). I've learned to enjoy playing Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures on the Xbox 360, and I've become a familiar face at the late morning Yoga sessions at my gym.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but hello to the tai-tai life, and boy it can be fun.

Except of course I don't blog so much anymore (actually I hardly surf the net) and I spend my 6 pms waiting for Eric to call me and tell me 'Ok you can start cooking now I'm on the way home'. So weekends are extra exciting because I get to look forward to having hubby to myself the ENTIRE 48 hours of Saturday and Sunday. We wake up later, and hubby cooks breakfast for me, and then we'll head out to Tesco or Giant to get our weekly groceries, nourish ourselves with basketfuls of meat and vegetables and head back to the house (yes our very own house) for a mean game of Soul Calibur.

I love my nourishing weekends and this Sunday's coming to an end again.
