Hindraf is Officialy Illegal

Hindraf has been declared Illegal and a threat to nasional security!!

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 (Bernama) — The Hindu Rights Actions Force (Hindraf) has been declared an illegal organisation from today, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar.

In a statement issued here, Syed Hamid said the decision to declare Hindraf as an illegal organisation was made following the ministry being satisfied with facts and evidence that showed Hindraf had and was being used for unlawful purposes and posed a threat to public order and morality.

“Based on powers vested under Section 5(1) of the Societies Act, Hindraf from today is declared an illegal organisation,” he said.

He said the order was being made as a result of monitoring and investigation on the organisation’s activities by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and Home Ministry, since Hindraf’s inception.

Syed Hamid said if left unchecked, Hindraf would continue to pose a threat to public order, the security and sovereignty of the country as well as the prevailing racial harmony.

I wrote a article about Sun Tzu’s Art of war concept of nip it in the bud. This is a age old tactic of crisis management which is expired in my view, the Home ministry obviously doesn’t seem to feel the same way about it

Hindraf ban - retrogressive/vindictive hampering nation-building healing process

The banning of Hindraf by the Home Minister, Datuk Seri Hamid Albar must be deplored in the strongest possible terms.

“No,咖啡因。”

“No、no、no、怀孕不可以吃羊肉。”

Call from PC to Phone for FREE with EVAPHONE

I just stumbled on a site that is able to make free calls from PC to phone. Perhaps there are other better site or method to make calls from PC to phone, but this is something I just happen to know when checking out some forums and thought of sharing it with all of you.

To be able to call from PC to phone, they’d have to use VoIP service. Voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) is a protocol optimized for the transmission of voice through the Internet or other packet-switched networks. VoIP is often used abstractly to refer to the actual transmission of voice (rather than the protocol implementing it). VoIP allows users to use regular telephone networks anywhere through any internet service provider, and avoids issues on long distance charges that are normally subject to callers. This latter concept is also referred to as IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband, broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

I’ve tested calling my land line and even my cellphone, both rang!

EvaPhone provides Internet telephone calls for free. Our site offers free VoIP call solutions: free VoIP service lets you make PC-to-phone free international calls. All you need is a computer to start making free VoIP calls using Internet to phone. Start enjoying the benefits of Internet telephony right now!

FREE PC to PHONE CALL

Using EVAPHONE is as easy as ABC. You need to enter www.evaphone.com in your browser and call the number you need. That’s all! Now you see its really easy. As long as you have a computer with a broadband connection and flash player 9.0 or higher installed, you can use EVAPHONE to make calls from your PC. Don’t need to install any third party software. It is advisable to have headset to avoid echo.

When you want to call a number from your PC, you need to watch a short advertisement first before it’ll connect you through. I believe that’s how they are able to provide free calls from PC to phone. However, after calling a few times for free, you’ll get the message “Your free call limit is exceeded for today. Would you like to register?” and “Call limit is exceeded for your IP”.

There’s a saying that goes “there is no free lunch in this world” and that is quite true. You can use EVAPHONE to call land line or cellphone for free but with time and call limit. Calling some countries can only last a few seconds but for calling United States can go up to 6 minutes! You can refer to this list on the free call duration. The free call is not really for chatting because of the call limitation but would be useful if you’re lazy to text using SMS and want to let your friend or family know about something immediately. It could also fun to prank your friends phone number if you have dynamic IP address ;)

YBhg Azman Ujang... We have a problem

Dear Abang Azman,

The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) is a media institution that trains journalists for the country.

Your CEO, Chamil Wariya, is a seasoned writer who 'nomaded' from Utusan Melayu Group to TV3 and then to journalistic oblivion, often times due to circumstances forced by political masters who assumed and/or vacated the political musical chair. I must also say that many in the media circle do believe he also ghost-writes Dr Khir Toyo's biography once upon a time when vitamins M ran low.

To be frank, that MPI picks him up as the chief to train our journalists is not a bad thing. Being fed years on Umno's life support system over extended years and judging from his experience in producing news, Chamil is a deft hand in spinning news if situation warrants it. Which is not a bad thing, really, as there are already tycoons who do journalism as a hobby.

What is bad is when he writes a short story (cerpen) in an Umno-owned paper that spits venom. The most recent incident was last Sunday, in Mingguan Malaysia (October 12, 2008). Chamil has never been known as a cerpen auteur, let alone a polkished dark humourist.

The cerpen is titled 'Politik Baru YB J'. The stinger is embedded in the epitaph:

YB Josephine was shot dead -- suicide-killer style -- in a Malaysian setting. But, who is this YB Josephine or YB J among us Honourable Members of Parliament?

I have strong reasons to believe that Chamil Wariya was targetting YB Teresa Kok, as the the premise-setting of his story resembles the recent life story of the affable YB. I will showcase these resemblance for you top understand the graphical details.

But I also believe Chamil was targetting DAP, or Parti Tindakan Demokratik, of which Teresa Kok is a member -- a member from the Pembangkang.

Chamil Wariya made a freudian slip when, by refering to Parti Orang Melayu as POM, he referred to Parti Orang Cina (POC) as Parti Bertindak Rakyat
, where 'tindakan' or 'bertindak' is to insinuate one of the root words for DAP as a political party.

How wrong was Chamil because in Malaysia, the real POC -- the race-based Chinese-centric political by constitution and by composition -- is none other than the MCA.

There rest of Chamil's cerpen has racist tone repeated and regurgitated throughout the story, which ended for a call for suicide-assassin to take care of the YB's life, like this, where Teresa Kok swims and floats throughout the wordy imagery:

  5. Kata hatinya lagi: “Aku sekadar memperjuangkan kepentingan kaum aku, sama seperti pemimpin Melayu dalam POM memperjuangkan kepentingan bangsanya, sama seperti pemimpin Parti Orang Islam (POI) berjuang untuk bangsa menggunakan wajah Islamnya.”

Ia perjuangan satu kaum. Kalau benar pelbagai kaum, YB patut mempertahankan tulisan jawi.” [...]

Coming to a crescendo over the POM-POC polemic, and then came the suicide killing.

It's no April's Fool joke of Kee Thuan Chye-kind, as the Star Editor might be the next target:

Dia teringat buku Kee Thuan Chye yang berjudul 8 Mac The Day Malaysian Woke Up.

Abang Azman, is this the message MPI is sending out to Malaysian journalists that you train?

Best regards
YB J (YB Jeff)

1Sentul, Jalan Sentul

We haven’t really been to Sentul all that often recently, but no doubt there have been quite a few happenings there in terms of property watching. Although not as ‘hot’ as Mont’Kiara or Damansara Somewhere, Sentul is basically an old established neighbourhood that is slowly (but surely) catching up with the times. Some of our associates that have lived and grown up in Sentul can attest to it being a nice place to live, but of course a little bit overcrowded like most parts of KL.

But many people living out Sentul may not know that about a decade ago, there were some big plans by a few developers (YTL and Bintai Kindenko being a couple of them) to carry out large scale development in the area, which includes re-developing old areas and some KTM land. But post-financial crisis (the 1997, not the one we’re facing now) these plans had to been rescaled, and in some cases, scrapped altogether (YTL is one who survived the crunch to launch their masterplan).

1sentul2

These days, smaller developers are working of any available small land in this area, going for condo since most of the plots are that size. 1Sentul is located just along Jalan Sentul, the thoroughfare that has is an integral linkway in the city since the 60’s. It is very near a few well-known schools, folks using this stretch of Jalan Sentul would be well aware of the congestion during school peak hours. The plot of land is right beside the chinese temple and there is also an old wooden house beside it. The sales people have told us that the wooden house will be demolished by another developer who has acquired the land. But of course, there is also a possibility nothing will happen since the developer isn’t the one who owns that piece of land.

1sentul

The sales people also mentioned the proposed DUKE highway will also benefit the condo since the planned Sentul Pasar interchange is very near here.

Across the road from 1Sentul is the Sri Suajaya which has been around for a good many years. In this area the are quite a few other condos, ranging from the Pelangi condo and Alampuri, to the more upmarket YTL’s Saffron in Sentul East, Casa Idaman and the Rivercity, the latter two located along Jalan Ipoh. Sentul East is not apples to apples comparison here though, that is a massive development with all the features of a mixed development compared to 1Sentul.

1sentula

But coming back to 1Sentul, there are two identical towers built on a common podium that almost squarish in shape. There are no basement parking floors, from the ground floor up until the 4th floor are parking levels for the tenants. The fifth floor is the where the common facilities are located. With the space constraint of a small land like 1Sentul, it is understandable that the facilities are not extraordinary, only what you would expect fron this price structure.

1sentulb

Each block has 4 wings arranged orthogonally like the points of a compass (but the alignment is slightly off north) and each wing has two conjoined units giving a total of 8 units per floor. This is one of their main selling points - each unit is a so-called “corner unit”. Definitely it has its benefits - more privacy, better ventilation and more window space, and fewer units per floor. There are only two types of units available, and each floor has 4 of each type. The smaller unit is 1,081sq. ft. while the larger is at a generous 2,709sq. ft. Ath 1,081sq.ft. the unit is quite large, and this makes the unit price more substantial due to the price per square foot. They’ve eschewed the idea of providing a few smaller units (usually about 800sq.ft.) on the lower floors to attract entry level purchasers. From this we can see that the target market are family units and investors. Both unit types are quite similar, with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths.

test

Currently the developers are offering 2 parking bays for every unit, and are also throwing in some freebies like kitchen cabinet per unit, but please check with the salespeople for the latest details.

1sentulc

We mentioned the price per square foot earlier, it is at an average of RM280psf. The price of the units start from RM305,800 up to RM903,800, bulked up because of the large build up.

Bottomline - do we like the condo? We okay with it, its more suitable for people looking to stay or invest in the area. Outsiders may not be comfortable with the pricing or surroundings, but its actually a decent buy.

I told you so!

Despite everyone saying that our Malaysian online advertising network, Advertlets are not paying, I still gave them a try and accumulated the minimum payment of RM100. This is because I still see some prominent blogger who promotes their service. My payment is now 2 and a half months due from the day I ask for my payment.

Here is what I have copied out from the FAQ, it seems that they do have the intention not paying or delaying the payment indefinitely because there is no mention of the processing time taken (I though I recall seeing some processing time)

When will I receive my money after I request a cashout?

By default we pay all publishers by check. After your account has accumulated exactly or more than RM100, you will see a cashout button. Once you’ve requested a cashout, we will send your check via mail for Malaysian publishers and Air mail for our Intern

As of today, Oct 15,2008, my payment status remains unpaid.

Did erase my username and shorten the bar so that it could be inserted on this blog easily.

I would guess that they will claim that I have click fraud and it is under investigation therefore it is slow (this is what I have read from other blog comments).

The good thing is that I have switch to other advertisements network after I got my minimum RM100 because of all the rumours. I guess I am not going back then.

Encoding a Barcode

I never knew how on earth you read a barcode and since there has been so much drama bout stuff that are made in China being dangerous etc etc…This is a useful tip to know where a product is made by simply checking out the first 3 digits of a barcode.

Since piracy is a very prevalent problem here and i was wondering how difficult would it be to change from made in China to made in Italy for instance?? Bar codes may be the next level of our checking process.

Look out for the first 3 digits and if they are of a certain number, they are from a certain country :

Malaysia - 955

China - 690 - 695

Singapore - 888

Mongolia - 865

And the full list is HERE

So the next time you have got to buy some food stuff and want to be very sure of its country of origin, print the list and take it along!! Can never be too sure :)

The new Macbook of 2008: my verdict

Macbook

The growing giant that is Apple has launched a new line of laptops. I own a Macbook myself and I must say that although I’m quite happy with it, the new version looks pretty enticing. Let’s stack them up against each other and Dell’s counterpart of the same specs.

My Macbook (bought January 2007 for USD999 w/ student discount)
Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger
1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (bought separately for USD89)
60GB HDD
Graphics: Intel GM 950 64MB VRAM
13.3″ screen

The New Macbook (launched 10/14/2008 priced at USD1299 w/o discount)
Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard
2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 1066MHz DDR3 Memory
160GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
13.3″ screen

Dell Inspiron 13 (currently priced at USD649)
Windows Vista Home Premium
1.86Mhz Pentium Dual Core
1GB DDR2 RAM
160GB HDD
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
13.3″ screen

To summarize the specs, Dell’s Inspiron 13 easily beats Apple in the price combat; add $100 to it and you get even better specs.

As for my Macbook, it is only lacking in a good graphics card and HDD space. What about the operating system? To tell you the truth, I really like OSX. If Leopard has not been made available yet, I’m completely satisfied and content with Tiger.

So what is exactly that you are paying for if you buy the new Macbook? Aside from Leopard, which is currently the undisputed champion in the OS world (in terms of functionality), you have an array of new features.

An Aluminum body enclosure
LED Backlit display
Advanced NVIDIA graphics
New glass trackpad
Environmentally friendly aspects
And lets not forget: an awesome design

Perhaps I have missed out some other brand new features, but these are the highlights. It seems to me that you are forking out cash for bells and whistles that you can certainly live without. As for putting up with the bloated Windows Vista if you buy a Dell, there is a remedy.

So what is my final verdict? If you currently own a Macbook, don’t by the new one unless yours is really old (think OSX 10.2 or 10.3). If you live in a shoebox and don’t have a laptop yet, get the Dell. If you light cigars with dollar bills, then you’ll be fine with the latest lowest-end Macbook Pro for USD1999 as your only computer.

Additional note: I don’t care who you are, I recommend you try a Mac. Its operating system alone is enough to turn the other cheek. The learning curve is not as steep as many would think. Don’t take my word for it, Google reviews of Vista and Leopard.

Noktah Hitam

Babilah..

At least once a week, I have people telling me they liked my Blogspot more than NoktahHitam.  Of course, it was in simple English, a few word twister, WAH LA,.. a post. Damn!

If I were given a chance to choose, I’ll stick with the old me. Unfortunately, everybody matures, like cheese and wine. Damn!

I guess everyone I know is reading NH, including my clients and family. I had to play it a key lower. Damn!

It could also be complacency. I’m no longer mad at the world. Damn!

Perhaps I’m earning twice as much as I used too. Big bucks, bigger ego. Damn!

Or because people know who I am. I have to be polite no matter what. Damn!

I’ve stated repetitively, I want to marry a doctor. I can’t be the-boy-your-daddy-warned-you-about anymore. Damn!

In search of fame and followers, I sold myself. Damn!

I think I messed up. Damn!

In short, Damn!

ps: Replace Damn with Babilah.

pss: *Babilah is a bad word. Don’t address it to others but yourself.

psss: With this post, I declare “babilah” as my shared trademark. Anyone caught using it as their blog title will be hacked.

Justification Behind Windows 7

Well the cat is out of the bag ,the new Microsoft OS which is due to be launched in a couple of years time. But why is it called Windows 7? There were all kinds of theories of the naming. Some very very bizarre justification but some were practical . Now the VISTA Blog’s Mike Nash explained the justification behind the the naming of the much anticipated OS.

The very first release of Windows was Windows 1.0, the second was Windows 2.0, the third Windows 3.0.

Here’s where things get a little more complicated.  Following Windows 3.0 was Windows NT which was code versioned as Windows 3.1. Then came Windows 95, which was code versioned as Windows 4.0.  Then, Windows 98, 98 SE and Windows Millennium each shipped as 4.0.1998, 4.10.2222, and 4.90.3000, respectively. So we’re counting all 9x versions as being 4.0.

Windows 2000 code was 5.0 and then we shipped Windows XP as 5.1, even though it was a major release we didn’t’ want to change code version numbers to maximize application compatibility.

That brings us to Windows Vista, which is 6.0.  So we see Windows 7 as our next logical significant release and 7th in the family of Windows releases.

So there you have it it was a simple numbering system with the OS’s that were launched which ultimately equated to the new OS being the 7th version hence WINDOWS 7

There Is No Magic

In The Magician there is a character that goes around telling everybody that there is no magic. That all practioners in different fields just have different bodies of knowledge with which they build insitutions around to make themselvse feel more important.

Hardly insightful.

True. It's a pretty old and repeated theme, often in science related circles. It extends to other fields as well. An English teacher once said to me, "The more you learn English, the less others understand you". Followed by, "People also use language for power by using these words (jargon)".

This isn't the only cause of jargon. They also exist to simplify communications for complicated concepts. I'm lucky I didn't go through the Malaysian education system which shoehorns Arts and Science students into streams. If you study different fields it'll help you see what's common across different areas of study, and be able to better understand and apply what's being worked on in one field in another.

An example of this is the design process. We were taught to:

  • Work through dozenss if possible of rough sketches and concepts first, possibly as a team, brainstorming different ideas, sometimes working apart to come out with radically different approaches.
  • Pick a few of the best, but different approaches and work on a bit detailed concepts.
  • Involve the clients early to show the initial concepts, get feedback, refine one or two of the best approaches.
  • Get back to client again for further feedback.
  • Create full scale mockup (if 3D) or detailed rendering.
  • Get more feedback.
  • Work on final prototype.

...

Sound familiar? Agile development, Editorial workflow, Scientific process.. etc. Jargon for similar concepts.

There is no magic.

You'll see that most good developers know a few programming languages also. It's important to take a step back sometimes and observe how other people in fields do things. Quite often, they're working on different sort magic, but underneath it, they're often trying to achieve solutions to similar problems in a different way that you can learn from. In my final year, I studied with a physics student. Common language was mathematical models, though mine were far simpler. I also studied with friends doing IT, CS, linguistics, anthropology and philosophy. This has helped immensely, even if it was not obvious then. For example on the topic of Quality, it's philosophical even. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is one such book that may help to better understand issues that effect all of us. When you struggle to define something, such as "What Makes A Senior (Devleoper)" then, maybe you can learn a lot from fields of study that have had to grapple with trying to understand something that's hard to define.

  • Paul Krugman won this year's Nobel Economics prize. Here's an autobiographical article on how he works: http://www.princeton.edu/~pkrugman/howiwork.html

The world faces on of the worst financial crisis its ever seened. Super powers of the world have rung the alarm bells to take precautions in anticipation of a crisis that could have a huge impact on the worlds economy and its ocupants. Singapore has declared recession but the government of Malaysia seems oblivious to this ugly wave that is hitting the world.

In a strage scenario, after a month and a half break at the parliament the law makers made their way back to the parliament to get straight into business. The weird thing was none of the ministers, deputy ministers were there! The opposition were calling for a review of the budget which was tabled before the Ramadhan break to be reviewed as it became obsolete since the current world economic situation. In all honesty we definitely need a new or improved budget to ensure we are not hit that hard by this crisis.

The pakatan MP’s were basically having a concersation between themselves and the speaker while the backbenchers club were mere spectators. Im shocked at this news!! Seriously, are the government serious about the rakyat or are they just too confident of their abilities??

The Pakatan law makers were not interested in politickling but to join forces with the government to come up with the best ossible solution in handling this crisis which the world is facing??

Is the UMNO elections more important than the economy and the well being of the rakyat? Please stop messing with our future and get back to work! You folks earn a healthy sallary and the rakyat have trusted you with leading the nation but we do not have room for arrogance, ignorance and ego!!

Watch the parliamentary sessions which was pretty much a sneak peak of what a new governemnt might look like(minus the seating arrangement)
