Jadi Khalid memang patut dipuji kerana mahu menegakkan kebenaran.

After my surgery last month, I realized how much my doctors mean to me. Dr. Lekovic and Dr. Schwartz successfully removed my brain’s Trigone Meningioma. But it took me 24 hours to wake up in the ICU. Even then, I experienced seizures during the five days I spent in the ICU. When I say seizure, it was not epileptic seizures and I wasn’t convulsing. But I did experience hallucinations and I was delusional.
I was confused. When they did not let me get down from bed, cuffed each of my hands to the bed, and did not let me drink or eat, I forgot that I had surgery and thought the nurses were plotting against me. I knew that I was somewhere in the hospital but the place looked unfamiliar, I thought I heard the nurses speak to me and behind me, trying to console me (which can’t be true since I am profoundly deaf). Thinking that I was in captivity, I tried to escape by tugging against my hand restraints, pulling out the IV needle from the back of my hand several times till my gown was drenched with blood, removing the strap which took my blood pressure automatically, and wanting to remove my catheter too so that I could run for safety. One time, I managed to get down when the nurse was unaware but as if I forgot to use my legs, I fell headfirst against some machenical device. I quickly climbed back into bed before anyone noticed. That’s when I understood why they did not let me get down.
In a state of confusion throughout that five days, I did not know if the things I heard, felt or saw were in reality. I have fractions of memories from my ICU stay but which were real and which were hallucinations?
In one of those recollections, I remember Dr. Lekovic standing by my ICU bed. He held my left hand and brushed the back of my hand against his cheek, turning it this way and that. I remember the look I thought I saw on his face. Dr. Lekovic was filled with emotions.
Did that happen when I first regained consciousness in the ICU and was Dr. Lekovic expressing his gladness? A week later when Dr. Warfern visited, she said that they were all very worried when I didn’t wake up.
Although I wasn’t fully conscious when Dr. Lekovic visited, but I felt his touch, the emotions he conveyed and I remembered him throughout my stay in the ICU.
In my confusion during the seizure, I felt victimized and afraid for my safety. At one point, I remembered my doctors and thought that if they knew I was in trouble they wouldn’t leave me alone. Then I cried.
So happened mom was visiting at that instant and seeing me cry, she thought I wanted to go back to Seton Hall with her. Actually, I just missed my doctors.
I believe the impressions Dr. Lekovic left when he visited helped me pull through. Although I did not understand what was happening to me, but I knew that I was in trouble and needed to get out of it. But the thought of my doctors comforted me and I would stop tugging at my restraints, to be a ’good patient’.
Over the past two days, I considered removing my brachial plexus tumors somewhere else where it can be done at a lower cost. When Tiam Loong visited and we packed some t-shirts together, I remembered all the people who sacrificed and went out of their ways so that I can get treated at HEI. But we need to raise between RM100k to RM200k for every surgery. Many of the people who helped do not have much themselves but they sacrificed for my sake and this makes me feel bad.
This morning as I laid thinking about the pros and cons of switching dctors, I suddenly remember the ICU experience I described above. Tears formed.
If I go somewhere else, I would be departing from the people who strengthens me.
But still, do I want those around me to keep working so hard for my sake? Someday, we’ll find a solution which allows me to remain under the care of my surgeons without troubling people so much.
Pendirian Pakatan Rakyat jelas iaitu kesucian rumah ibadat, walau apapun kepercayaannya mestilah dihormati.

Yes, I am back with Exabytes Hosting. A few months ago I ended my hosting with Exabytes because I am getting quite frequent downtime with Exabytes, then I was offered a free hosting by Exabytes just a week ago. They had given me this hosting for free, to prove that their move to AIMS datacenter will improve their server uptime, previously their servers with TM Net. I did not need any extra hosting but since they are free (I already had 2), I think that it is great to give them a try.
I have transfered one of my website back to Exabytes, it is at Mart.com.my. Although Serverfreak uptime has been great so far, I still miss the Exabytes load speed for Malaysian and it is still the same with AIMS datacenter.
Submit a ticket for SSH in order for me to transfer my domain quickly, and within 2 minutes it is activated. It was pretty much the same as previously.
Remember the phase I have repeated 4 times in my last post?
We live in a complicated world and it is when we try to simplify things that we make a lot of mistakes.
Sirian wrote this as a comment on his view about calcium and milk.
Well just thought I’d point out that your ability to uptake calcium is dependant on vitamin D which the body produces in its skin when exposed to sunlight. The countries with less sunlight have a higher osteoporosis level because of this not because of the calcium.
Another thing is that the study was skewed by age. People in the high calcium uptake areas have a much higher life expectancy. Old people get osteoporosis because they’re old and do not put much strain on they’re bones. Not because they drink milk.
If drinking milk reduced the calcium in your bones then why does it only seem to affect such a small portion of the population and why only when they’re over 70 years old. I know people who don’t drink anything other than milk and water. Surely they should be dead by now or have bones so week that they break constantly.
Finally as for the acidity in the blood any food, and I really do mean any food, that we eat and can digest is broken down into acids. That’s how our bodies transport fats and proteins. So erm I guess your saying eating is bad for you. Also just to add to this point if you drink semi skimmed or skimmed milk then that will have most of the fatty acids removed.
Finally just incase you were still unconvinced that this was all nonsense. you could test the urine for the calcium containing compounds that would be produced and guess what. There aren’t any. This is unfortunately one of those myths that crept up because of misinterpreted data.
His view sum up almost everything, not just about calcium and milk, but about the fact that “We live in a complicated world and it is when we try to simplify things that we make a lot of mistakes.”
Is it really protein that cause cancer?
Is it true that by adding Omega 3 to babies milk we are able to make our children smarter?
Is it true that eating seafood will increase your cholesterol?
Is it true that oily food are bad for health?
In this world, things are very complicated. But what scientist like to do (what our “brain” like to do), is to simplify things (solving problem). We like to think that the world is a simple as 1 cause to 1 effect.
For example, a scientist who discover about fiber will like to claim that fiber is able to solve all our health problems. 1 cause (fiber) create 1 effect (health).
The same goes to the protein expert, who claim that 1 cause (protein) create 1 effect (cancer).
And the chi-gong master, who claim that 1 cause (chi-gong) create 1 effect (health).
And the list goes on, enzymes, Omega 3, Vitamin C, beta-carotene, yoga, meditation, morning walk, an apple a day …
Even in the complicated economics world, experts do the same thing – trying to nail down a single cause to a single event. For example, even Ten Teng Boo repeatedly saying that the financial crisis is caused by the collapsed of Lehman brothers. Some insist that it is cause by subprime lending. And interesting enough, many Americans like to blame it on China.
But they are all right and wrong at the same time. The world (the economy) is so complicated that how can it be possible that 1 word “Lehman” or “China” cause everything?
Everything that happens consist of multiple causes, probably billions of billion causes.
While trying to figure out that 1 billion causes is impossible, trying to nail down something to just 1 cause is also very foolish.
So if I stop eating protein my cancer will get healed?
So if I eat Vitamin C I will not get sick?
So if I stop drinking milk I will have strong bones?
So if I start to practice chi-gong or yoga I will be very healthy?
In the movie “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, Benjamin (Brad Pitt) told a story on how Daisy was hit by a taxi and crushed her leg.
Sometimes we’re on a collision course, and we just don’t know it. Whether it’s by accident or by design, there’s not a thing we can do about it.
A woman in Paris was on her way to go shopping, but she had forgotten her coat – went back to get it. When she had gotten her coat, the phone had rung, so she’d stopped to answer it; talked for a couple of minutes.
While the woman was on the phone, Daisy was rehearsing for a performance at the Paris Opera House. And while she was rehearsing, the woman, off the phone now, had gone outside to get a taxi. Now a taxi driver had dropped off a fare earlier and had stopped to get a cup of coffee. And all the while, Daisy was rehearsing. And this cab driver, who dropped off the earlier fare; who’d stopped to get the cup of coffee, had picked up the lady who was going to shopping, and had missed getting an earlier cab.
The taxi had to stop for a man crossing the street, who had left for work five minutes later than he normally did, because he forgot to set off his alarm. While that man, late for work, was crossing the street, Daisy had finished rehearsing, and was taking a shower. And while Daisy was showering, the taxi was waiting outside a boutique for the woman to pick up a package, which hadn’t been wrapped yet, because the girl who was supposed to wrap it had broken up with her boyfriend the night before, and forgot.
When the package was wrapped, the woman, who was back in the cab, was blocked by a delivery truck, all the while Daisy was getting dressed. The delivery truck pulled away and the taxi was able to move, while Daisy, the last to be dressed, waited for one of her friends, who had broken a shoelace. While the taxi was stopped, waiting for a traffic light, Daisy and her friend came out the back of the theater.
And if only one thing had happened differently: if that shoelace hadn’t broken; or that delivery truck had moved moments earlier; or that package had been wrapped and ready, because the girl hadn’t broken up with her boyfriend; or that man had set his alarm and got up five minutes earlier; or that taxi driver hadn’t stopped for a cup of coffee; or that woman had remembered her coat, and got into an earlier cab, Daisy and her friend would’ve crossed the street, and the taxi would’ve driven by. But life being what it is – a series of intersecting lives and incidents, out of anyone’s control – that taxi did not go by, and that driver was momentarily distracted, and that taxi hit Daisy, and her leg was crushed.
[bolded by me]
This story consist of so much wisdom that reading it myself make me want to cry.
Don’t try to nail down a single cause to a single event. It is complicated. We have to accept that there are many things that we couldn’t grasp with our mind. And by “accepting”, we can be more humble, more open and more willing to see things in more ways. We can start to aspire the wonders of the universe, the wonders or every thing around us, the wonders of our body, the wonders of every cells working so well with each other.
I will never dare to say that I have gotten the answer, or I have got the “secret code” to heath. Because no matter what, I am going to miss something, which is guaranteed. And no matter what, we all are going to die. So instead of insisting we are right, I think it will be smarter if we learn to see things in more ways. And then we can decide what we want to do.
When something like this happen, you will see everyone blaming everyone else. Even Penang Barisan National can use it to blame Pakatan Rakyat. Then we have all sorts of comments and criticizes, “they are not suppose to … do this … do that”, “they should … do this … do that”, everyone becomes expert, they want someone to be responsible. For them, it happened because someone is “wrong”.
Student Kuah Zi Xun, who was sitting at the rear of the boat, said the rowers were doing their final lap when the boat was hit by strong waves.
The boat then rammed into a tugboat moored nearby.
"A second strong wave then hit us and our boat overturned."
"All of us were thrown into the sea and a strong undercurrent pulled all of us underwater, he said when met at the scene.
Kuah said only 12 of them, who wore life jackets, managed to swim to the surface and stayed afloat.
Some of them managed to swim some 400 metres to the shore while others were rescued by two passing fishing boats.
Three of them were admitted at the Penang Hospital for minor injuries while another was discharged after receiving outpatient treatment.
Eyewitnesses said some of the rowers had shouted for help while floating in the sea.
Devastated parents of the missing boys were seen weeping uncontrollably near the scene.
There is no single reason or cause for this tragedy but billions of them. So many things had to happen together to make it happen! A slight changes to these “conditions” will make the event totally different. Remember the story of Benjamin Button?
And if one thing had happened differently: If they practice 1 less lap and went home earlier; if the strong wave doesn’t hit them on the final lap;if the tugboat is not “waiting” there; if there is no under-current, if they are nearer to the shore …
Sometimes we’re on a collision course, and we just don’t know it. Whether it’s by accident or by design, there’s not a thing we can do about it.
We don’t know why. No one need to be responsible for it and NO ONE CAN be responsible for it! None of the comments and critics and advices can change anything. The only thing you can do is to accept it.
I watched TV yesterday, and I am very touched by a victim’s mum. When interviewed in her son funeral, she said,
I accept… I accept… I know the world is full of uncertainties… I do learn Buddhism… I accept… I accept… He came to this world happily … and he is leaving this world happily… I accept… I accept …
It is very hard to do what she do. But she is definitely doing the right thing that is good for herself, good for her son, good for her family and good for everyone else. No blaming. No one need to be responsible. What happened is already happened. No one can change the past. I accept.

Can someone tell me why a 19″ all-in-one touchscreen PC would cost $1999? Even if the Kids CyberNet Station (by Kids Computers) comes with “50+ Programs Installed”, nearly two-thousand dollars for what’s basically an under-powered PC is simply too much. Especially when OpenOffice is one of the pre-installed applications, and the computer doesn’t even feature dedicated graphics hardware.
Last year saw the debut of the MSI Wind Top. The basic AE2220 model features a 21.5″ touchscreen display, a 320GB hard drive, and GeForce 9300 graphics. The launch price of this computer, which also comes with a wireless mouse and keyboard, and can be mounted on the wall like an LCD TV, was $749. Less than half the price of the Kids CyberNet Station. The only thing in Kids Computers’ favor is the slightly larger hard disk. But is that advantage really worth over a thousand dollars?

The unfortunate thing is that some parents, eager to pay for their children’s education, may blindly spend their hard-earned money on the CyberNet station. Kids Computers have used a time-tested technique (”it will make your kid smarter!”) to sell a PC at a price way over its value.

Bad news for those who try to stay active to make up for their sedentary geeky lifestyles: sitting down for long periods is bad for you, even if you exercise regularly. From Yahoo:
“After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals,” Ekblom-Bak said. She explained that genes regulating the amount of glucose and fat in the body start to shut down.
Even for people who exercise, spending long stretches of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization, said people who exercise every day — but still spend a lot of time sitting — might get more benefit if that exercise were spread across the day, rather than in a single bout.
The article goes on to suggest that those who spend all day in front of computers—pretty much anyone who reads this blog I think—should try to take a break from sitting as much as possible. In an office setting, this obviously involves standing up and actually socializing with your co-workers.
But what if you work at home? Or can’t take long breaks and leave your WoW raiding partners to fend for themselves? Luckily here’s more advice you can follow:

I got my biggest check ever from Aweber, for $1,158.71. The truth – it’s my one year total earnings
My affiliate commissions were so low, that I decided to set a higher payout limit because I didn’t want to receive checks for amounts lower than $500.
I didn’t really promote Aweber aggressively until mid-2009 as you can see from the earnings below.

Promoting services like Aweber is a lot more difficult that promoting a typical ClickBank “make money” e-book, for a few reasons:
However, the BIG advantage of promoting recurring products like Aweber is that when you have a satisfied buyer, you can literally earn from that one referral for years. I can’t remember if I clicked on someone’s affiliate link when I signed up for Aweber, but hey I’ve been using them for more than two years now.
If you’re thinking or promoting recurring products like Aweber etc, here’s my advice:
So what did I do to increase my Aweber commissions since July 2009?
It’s easy – I created a product called RSS To Email and sold it with Master Resell Rights. The product itself explains how to use Aweber to build a big subscriber list from your blog, instead of services like FeedBurner etc.
It worked really well. I made money upfront (more than $6k), resellers made money, and Aweber made money. Win-win-win
You can also get Private Label Rights to that product from PLR WordPress Videos and take it to the next level.

From Malaysia Today
Yesterday the Federal Court postponed its decision on the Anwar Ibrahim appeal for additional discovery by nine days to January 29th. This forces a one-week delay in the start of the sodomy trial to February 2.
The Federal Court’s decision came as a surprise given its Monday morning rejection of a defense request to postpone today’s hearing.
It has also led some observers to the conclusion that the Federal government, seen to be the unseen hand behind the prosecution of Anwar, has flinched.
Since early December the Court has been seen to be on a fast track to start the trial on January 25th. Due process in the final appeal for discovery was almost cast aside in the interests of expediency and the scheduling today’s hearing was also regarded as fast tracking an appeals process which has favoured the prosecution at every stage.
Some are asking why reject the defense’s request for postponement on Monday and then postpone the case two days later?
Behind the scenes there is still little consensus on whether or not this trial will end badly for BN. Some in the ruling coalition believe a repeat of the 1998 Reformasi demonstrations is unlikely and a swift and clean conviction would elicit minimal public outrage. Others are not so sure, and are fearful that Anwar Ibrahim’s ability to mobilize huge mass demonstrations from behind bars is even greater today.
Given the negative publicity that nation has endured since Najib’s premiership began, the country can hardly afford another major international fiasco.
First was the blitzkrieg on Najib and his alleged ties to the Altantuya murder and submarine scandal. Subsequently there have been a number of embarrassing headlines including the women sentenced to caning for alcohol consumption, the cow head incident, and most recently the attacks on Churches and the quarrelling over the prohibition of non-Muslims using the world Allah.
The United States issued a travel advisory to citizens traveling in Sabah, following the Church attacks. Its criticism of some Malaysian policies has been harsh in the recent past.
Splayed across the headlines of the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Financial Times, these images are wholly inconsistent with PM Najib’s 1Malaysia slogan and offer bad publicity for a nation whose economic livelihood depends on the continuous flow of foreign direct investment.
With Anwar’s trial looming, it is accepted that there will be a heavy price to pay in the international community given Anwar Ibrahim’s impeccable networking with world leaders and the international media, the legacy of his botched 1998 trials and the dark cloud still hanging over Malaysia’s troubled judiciary since the Lingam tape controversy demonstrated pervasive corruption in the Malaysian courts.
It is also believed that Prime Minister Najib has come under intense international pressure during his current road trip to end what is perceived as the ongoing judicial persecution of Anwar Ibrahim. Efforts by Malaysian ambassadors to justify the case have been largely rebuffed and some world leaders have made personal calls on the Prime Minister to urge him to change course.
The postponement can therefore be seen in the broader context of the UMNO’s inability to commit fully to the political risk of Sodomy II.

CENTURIES back, tribes in Arabia were said to have each consulted a gathering of elders and community leaders for guidance in making decisions for the people. The use of such a council, called the “shura”, was meant to act as a congenial forum for decisions to be made in an air of mutual respect and responsibility. The shura formed one of the key characteristics of governance in the region during the early Islamic period, and even before the religion rose to prominence.
There was an interesting development in Penang last week when the Pakatan Rakyat state administration formed the first ever shura gathering for any government in the country.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng launched the Penang Shura Council which brought together some 30 persons from Islamic agencies and NGOs, as well as syariah lawyers, before it convened its inaugural meeting at his office last Friday.
The occasion turned out to be a rather warm-hearted affair. Chaired by PKR’s state executive councillor Abdul Malek Abul Kassim, the council is meant to serve as an advisory platform for the state on various Islamic issues and to make recommendations when necessary.
The formation of a shura council in the only state in peninsular Malaysia with a non-Muslim majority population is a significant step for Lim and the ties that now bind secular DAP, Muslim PAS and multi-ethnic PKR.
For some time now, and to a large degree, Lim has managed to endear himself to the Muslim populace, as evinced by the ovations he received from Pakatan supporters during the by-election campaigns in Penanti and Permatang Pasir last year, and even before that, at the landmark Permatang Pauh parliamentary contest that ushered Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim back to Parliament in 2008.
And in the process, he has worked to break new ground by becoming closely bonded with Muslim groups and the masses. In fact, I have observed that there has been a concerted effort by Lim’s administration to undertake activities to present the state government as being highly supportive of Muslim affairs in Penang.
As it is, folks in villages and the Malay heartland still remember him getting jailed a decade back while trying to defend a Malay-Muslim girl in an alleged statutory rape case. Then, just days after he assumed power in March 2008, Lim raised eyebrows by attending the Maal Hijrah state-level festival, becoming the first non-Muslim government leader to attend the religious event.
In fact, Lim had during a visit by PAS president Hadi Awang in April 2008, proposed the formation of a Penang Religious Goodwill Council, a suggestion that was favourably received, only to be hit by critics from the other side of the political divide. And in his administration, he has consistently been referring to medieval Islamic leader and scholar Khalifah Umar Abdul Aziz as a model and inspiration; drawing praise from Muslims, including ulamaks.
Lim also initiated the conferring of monetary awards by the state for all Huffaz (people who have memorised the Quran by heart) in the state. He has stood on stage with the governor of Penang at the ceremonies where the Huffaz were given their awards.
And in the economic sphere, Lim has been a driving force, together with Malik, in establishing a halal hub in Penang; with land already allocated for the purpose, and investments now coming in.
There was, however, one particular issue that drew silent attention during the shura’s first meeting – the appointment of the new president of the Penang Islamic Religious Council (MAIPP), Elias Zakaria, as a member. The Pakatan Rakyat had wanted PAS state commissioner Salleh Man to assume the MAIPP’s head post after the term of the previous president, Shahbudin Yahaya of Umno, expired late last year. However, the Pakatan leadership had to acquiesce as the King stood by the royal decision to appoint Elias.
Elias was absent during the inaugural shura meeting, but there were other prominent personalities present to weigh in their support, including the state mufti, Datuk Hassan Ahmad, and Penang syariah court chief judge Yusof Musa.
Due mainly to political differences, the Pakatan state authorities had had a rather acerbic relationship with Shahbudin when he headed the MAIPP. In one of their most bitter confrontations, Shahbudin, the Umno assemblyman for Permatang Berangan, had objected to Lim employing the Arabic phrase “Amal maaruf nahi mungkar” (enjoining good, forbidding evil), a line derived from the Quran, arguing that it was not meant for a non-Muslim.
It is remarkable to note that even as Lim and Shahbudin clashed on the matter, the Muslim representatives in PR came out in support of Lim, praising him for taking heed of a noble Islamic tenet.
Now with the formation of the landmark shura council, Malek has insisted there would be a strong forum for the state to work more cohesively with MAIPP and the State Islamic Religious Department. It is, after all in that spirit of consultation and dialogue that the early civilisations of Arabia had evolved the concept of the shura. Above all, it will be most interesting to observe how the initiative for the shura develops, to further cement ties that have found new ground between Muslims and non-Muslims in PR and the civil societies in Penang.
Penang has generally been overwhelmed by deep sorrow over the tragic loss of a teacher and 5 students of Chung Ling National Type Secondary School during the dragon boat training mishap in waters off Macallum Street Ghaut on Sunday 17 January 2010. These are no ordinary students and teacher.
Goh Yi Zhang, 17, Brendon Yeoh, Wang Yong Xian, 16, Jason Ch’ng, 17, and Cheah Zi Jun, 17 were top students, the creme de la creme who excelled in academic studies, extra-curricular activities and social involvement. The teacher Chin Aik Siang, 28, was even more outstanding scoring straight As in STPM. Living in a low-cost flat in Bagan, Chin qualified to study medicine but switched a few weeks later to his love, teaching.
And this is no ordinary school. Chung Ling is amongst the top schools in Penang and still produces some of the top students. Its alumni rank amongst the captains and leaders in economics, education, politics and industry be it manufacturing or services both in and outside Penang. And the school dragon boat team is the top in the state.
As the tributes to the departed end and the plaintive cries of the funeral fades, what remains is a huge empty hole for not just the parents and family members but also the school and their friends. One can hardly empathise the inconsolable grief endured by a parent losing a child. What made the loss of the six more keen was the sheer loss of top human talent and potential unrealised that the country can ill afford.
The Penang state government extends its deepest sympathies and hopes that the family members can be comforted by their pride in raising a child of such outstanding quality. And their grief be eased by the wonderful memories that brought them joy and brightened up the lives of those they touch.
Whilst this loss may remind us on the fragility of life that cuts youthful promise before its prime, we should not just bewail fate alone. The Penang state government will act pro-actively by proposing safety and regulatory measures that were deemed unnecessary in the past. Whilst the Penang Education Department had immediately pinned the blame on Chung Ling school, justice and fair play demands that a full public and independent inquiry must first be held before judgment is passed.
More importantly there must be more opportunities offered for students to nurture excellence. There is something wrong with our education system that stresses students beyond their physcial limits. We can no longer burden our students with excessive pursuit of extra-curricular points, which are now compulsory, to get scholarships and university places.
A mark of good leadership is not merely the ability to show a better performance than others but that room and opportunity is offered for others to perform better than the leaders. Similarly to fulfill the promise of youth, we do not just build the future for our youth, but we must build our youth for the future. This is the promise Penang will try to accomplish to build not only a more desirable Penang but equip our youth with the capacity and ability to face the future.

“Kalau kita tengok kes Terengganu, kes sama lah tu, hingga sekarang masih belum selesai,” katanya.
Menyentuh mengenai pembayaran wang ihsan, Salleh menambah, ia wujud setelah Kelantan membuat tuntutan Royalti.

Proposed Regulations For Private Dragon Boat Clubs On Safety Measures
I support the suggestion by the Penang State Government that the Federal Government establish a formal inquiry into the dragon boat mishap at Gat Lebuh Macallum that caused the loss of 6 lives. Following the initial blame on Chung Ling School by the Penang Education Department, it is only fair that a full independent and public inquiry be held before judgement is passed. The Penang State government is willing to fully support and give any assistance to an inquiry to provide full accountability to this tragic accident.
Penang State Government wishes to express heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. It was most unfortunate and disheartening that the recent dragon boat training of Chung Ling High School with the supervision of the coach and assistant coach of the Penang Forward Sports Club cost the lives of a teacher and five students from Chung Ling High School.
Private clubs such as the Penang Forward Sports Club has always been self-regulating without any control by the state government.
In view of what has happened, the Penang State Government will hold a meeting proposing to regulate the private clubs in terms of safety and discuss issues such as:
a) Requiring rowers to wear a Personal Floatation Aid (Buoyancy Aid or life jacket) while training in open waters such as in seas and dams.
b) All rowers must be able to swim at least 50 meters and tread water for at least 3 minutes
c) In all State organised races, under the Rules and Regulations of Competitions, all crews must comply with the International Dragon Boat Federation water safety standards.
d) Offering the use of Teluk Bahang Dam for training free of charge during day time 7 days a week, and
e) Any other relevant safety issues
Clarification on some confusing facts:
Q: The Chung Ling High School Dragon Boat Team conducted their training at Gat Lebuh Macallum because they want to get used to the venue as the State Government had chosen the site as a Dragon boat competition venue.
A: Actually Penang Forward Sports Club has been conducting training at the site for the past three years without any mishaps. The Chung Ling High School Team has been training under the supervision of this club for the past two to three years on a voluntary basis.
The Pesta Open Dragon Boat Race which was held on 12th and 13th of December 2009 at Bandar Sri Pinang waterfront off Jelutong Expressway is a totally different location away from the Macallum Street Ghaut waterfront where the tragedy occurred.
During the Pesta Open Dragon Boat Race last year, two boats collided because there were no demarcation lanes. After that incident, the State Government has decided that future races will not be held in the open seas
Q: Why was Penang Forward Sports Club allowed to conduct training at the Macallum Street Ghaut waterfront?
A: The training by Penang Forward Sports Club was not sanctioned by the State Government and held on private initiative.
For the past twenty years, dragon boat crews have been training in the open seas without any untoward incidents.
Previously, private clubs did not have a specific location for training. Since early last year, the State Government has taken the initiative to grant special permission for crews to train at the Telok Bahang Dam from 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm every Saturday and Sunday.
Now the Teluk Bahang Dam will be available for all local dragon boat crews to conduct their training the whole day at any time of the week without any charges / fee. The State Government and PBA will build additional facilities such as toilets, bathrooms, pontoon, storage room and etc for the dragon boat crews.
9 January 2010 Meeting
On 9th of January 2010, the Penang International Dragon Boat Festival Committee informed dragon boat club team managers that the Teluk Bahang Dam will be the recommended location for local teams to train.
Aside from the Chung Ling High School Dragon Boat Team, dragon boat teams from schools such as the SMJK Heng Ee, SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian, SK Tanjung Bungah and St Xavier’s Institution have also been training in the open sea.
For at least more than twenty years, Chung Ling High School has been actively involved in dragon boat racing and is one of the top school crews in Penang. They have won numerous races in the School Category and recently, during the Penang Open Dragon Boat Race held on 12th and 13th December 2009, they were the champions in the 200 meter Junior Race Category. They have won numerous races in the schools, national and international categories.
The State Government will be conducting training on water safety for all dragon boat crews in the near future.
We welcome all experts in the field to join our Water Sports Safety Advisory Panel to look into, improve and implement safety requirements and standards for dragon boat racing and training. We will be looking into the matter and will fix a day for dialogue with all dragon boat crews and all parties.

The sky getting dark, so we have to go to bed.
“Fuiyo, raining day so cooling good to sleep.”
“Because the water bottle are next to the 书包, so I 收拾书包 can take the bottle to drink water.”
……
……
……
