.NET Framework Setup Verification Utility

With more and more software developed and compiled in C# programming language, it would only mean that the user will require .NET Framework installed in order to run the application. Windows XP which was released 11 years ago and it doesn’t come with any .NET Framework pre-installed while Vista comes with .NET Framework 3.0 and Windows 7 with .NET Framework 3.5. Currently the latest .NET Framework has already reached version 4.0 and we will be expecting version 4.5 when Windows 8 is released. Some users prefers not to use software that requires .NET Framework thinking that installing .NET Framework will slow down their computer but the fact is .NET Framework will NOT slowdown your computer.

However the biggest problem with .NET Framework would be having multiple versions installed because it doesn’t mean that you don’t need older versions of .NET Framework when the latest .NET Framework 4.0 is already installed. There are some programs which are hard coded to run on a specific version of .NET Framework so it is best to have all .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 installed for full compatibility. When you fail to run a program that requires .NET Framework, then you will need to first verify if the .NET Framework installed on your computer is corrupted before reinstalling it which can actually cause more problems than fixing it. One easy way to achieve that is to use .NET Framework Setup Verification Utility.

The .NET Framework Setup Verification Utility by Aaron Stebner is a very small and portable tool at only 272KB in size that you can use to verify the presence of files, directories, registry keys and values for the .NET Framework that is installed in your Windows computer. The latest version of .NET Framework Setup Verification Utility is able to automatically perform a set of steps to verify the installation state of the following .NET Frameworks:

.NET Framework 1.0
.NET Framework 1.1
.NET Framework 1.1 SP1
.NET Framework 2.0
.NET Framework 2.0 SP1
.NET Framework 2.0 SP2
.NET Framework 3.0
.NET Framework 3.0 SP1
.NET Framework 3.0 SP2
.NET Framework 3.5
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1
.NET Framework 4 Client
.NET Framework 4 Full

Only the .NET Framework that the utility detects on the computer will be listed for verification so you won’t be seeing all of the above versions of the .NET Framework on the program. To verify the install state of a .NET Framework, simply select the version at the drop down box and click the Verify Now button. If the current status shows “Product verification succeeded”, then it means no problem but if you get a failed message, then you can consider reinstalling the .NET Framework version that has failed the verification.

Verify .NET Framework

You can also click on the View Log button to see what files and registry are being checked and what errors it encounters while verifying a product which is very useful in troubleshooting a corrupted .NET Framework.

HIV funding cuts – two sides of the coin

FMT reports Anti-AIDS work hit by funding cuts whereas in Malaysiakini Health Ministry denies cuts in HIV/Aids funding which echoes what FMT reported the DG as saying. The Health Minister also claimed that We did not cut HIV cash aid – but merely “delayed it”.
So who are you to believe? I do find it incredible that the MOH will use a 2003 MOU as justification that they are spending enough on HIV programmes when one would think the situation would not be the same 9 years later. The Health Minister should also ponder the fact that the end result of “delaying funding” and “cutting funding” is still the same.
There is no smoke without fire. The MAC is the leading organisation and NGO in the fight against AIDs in the country. If a statement like this is any indication:

Earlier yesterday, MAC vice-president Hisham Hussein told a press conference at the Parliament lobby that the budget cuts have resulted in the closure of several programmes and syringe needle exchange programme centres nationwide.

- something indeed is seriously amiss. There’s clearly not enough money but where has it all gone? I can’t help but think if RM500 commission for submarines could have been better spent for health in this country when the MOH is splitting hairs over RM40 million versus RM 65 million. Not to mention money spent/lost/leaked on cowdominiums and port fiascos.

Write Protect or Deny Access to your USB Drives

These days, USB storage devices are all around us and just about every person who owns a computer has a pen stick or portable hard drive. They are a useful medium to quickly transfer files from one PC to another instead of dragging big devices and cables everywhere. Sadly, along with the rise in portable storage, a great risk emerged because it didn’t take long for viruses to find a way to spread to other systems through USB by using the drives themselves to transport the infection.

Disabling Autorun in Windows is a step forward in stopping these devices trying to infect a machine as soon as it gets plugged in. Along with the security aspect, there are many times when you just don’t want anything on the USB drive to be deleted, moved or even executed. There are some sticks that come with a write lock but you pay a premium for the function. Using an SD card with a lock and an adapter is also an option which is what I use myself when needing to transfer files to another computer.

There is a small utility that can write protect any USB storage devices when plugged into your PC so there can’t be any unauthorised access. The program is called USB Disk Manager and along with write protecting your drive, has a few more features that may be useful if you want more protection from USB threats.

Other things it is able to do include blocking any executable file running itself from the USB device, meaning no virus that spreads itself this way can run. Another feature is being able to completely block read or write access on USB removable disks so any kind of file transfer is not possible.

The program is portable so simply download and extract it to your chosen location, and open the USB Disk Manager.exe (you may have to right click and ‘Run as Administrator’). If the program has not popped its window into view, click on the icon in the system tray.

The ‘Write Protect’ window allows for turning on the write protection so no files can be written to the drive from your system while this option is active. Useful if you don’t want any users to put anything on the device while it’s connected. As noted, reconnection of the device will be required for the option to take effect.

The ‘Execute Deny’ window will stop any programs on the device from executing themselves so a virus cannot run itself while this is active. This is quite useful if a drive is plugged into a machine and you cannot trust what the contents are. Especially handy in cases where youngsters are sharing data on their pen sticks with friends and are not quite as careful as they need to be. Take note, a reboot may be needed.

This option is an extension of write protect and will disable any access to the files on the device completely, so you cannot read the files from it, or write files to it. If you don’t want to allow anybody using the system to use USB storage devices at all, try this. Again, reconnect the device for this to be enabled.

The last window is for general settings and includes the option to turn off Autorun for USB disks which is a good idea anyway. Applying the setting for the current logged on user can be used if you are the Administrator of the machine and there are user accounts which you would like to use the USB Disk Manager options on.

The other option worth a mention is copying USB Disk Manager to storage devices automatically when they are inserted into your PC. The Manager and an Autorun will be copied to any USB disk you plug in and IF Autorun is enabled on any other PC you insert the USB device in to, the Manager will run allowing setup of the options on that system.

As this utility is actually a number of registry tweaks in an easy to use GUI, it does mean these options are machine specific. Enabling the write protect option for example, does not write protect the device but the current systems or users access to it. Take it to another PC where the tool hasn’t been used, and it will behave like a normal drive. Where is does help, is when the drive comes back from being connected to another PC and you can’t be completely sure it’s still 100% clean.

USB Disk Manager is compatible with XP, Vista and 7 32 & 64bit

Solver Scrabble Generate Words from Letters to Assist in Draw Something Game

A lot of people I know are hooked to the game Draw Something where you can draw on your screen based on the word that is given to you and let your friends guess what is it that you’ve drawn. Guessing the drawing correctly will earn coins to both drawer and guesser. Each player takes a turn in drawing and guessing which makes it fair but there are quite a number of players that likes to guess but doesn’t put much effort when it comes to their turn to draw. They can draw really crappy drawings that is impossible to guess, or they simply write the answer on screen. You can either swipe them off to delete them from your game or use a cheating tool such as a word generator from Solver Scrabble to generate possible answers from the letters that are given to you.

All you need to do is key in the letters into the box in Solver Scrabble’s website and click the Get Words button. Words are instantly generated from the letters given by you and displayed at the same page after an automatic refresh. The words are categorized into numbers of letters which is very helpful for Draw Something game. Here is an example of a pretty bad drawing which I can’t tell what it is.

Draw Something

I entered all 12 letters into Solver Scrabble and received 7 words which are possible answers for the drawing. With a bit of common sense by referring back to the drawing, I am guessing that the answer could be octagon.

Build Word from Letters

Correct! An octagon is a shape with 8 angles and eight sides.

Draw Something Correct

I’ve seen some Draw Something players even managed to get up to 90 over turns and to be honest I don’t think you can even get that far with a scrabble word finder, builder or generator because it cannot generate words from names of popular artists such as Bieber, cartoon characters such as TinTin or even country like Finland. Nevertheless, at least it can surely help you guess some words from really bad drawings sometimes. I have tested a few other online websites that offers the generation of words from letters and I can say that Solver Scrabble always offer more words when compared with its competitors.

If most of the time you are not familiar with the words probably due to English is not your first language, another tip to help you draw better is to search the word that is given to you in Google Images.

Video: Awesome Jumping Robot

I’ve seen some pretty cool remote controlled robots in my day but this robot might be the coolest of them all. Watch the video below of the amazing robot called “Sand Flea”. The robot only weighs eleven pounds and doesn’t look to be very spectacular … but keep watching the video.

As you’ll see, this robot has an extreme talent: It can jump more than 25 feet in the air! I’m not sure of the science behind its jumping ability but it sure is impressive. Not only can it jump, it can land on any terrain without suffering damage.

This robot was created by Boston Dynamics and is funded by The United States Army’s Rapid Equipping Force. In the video, you can see how the robot is able to jump onto a building and jump onto a hill … skills that are very valuable in a robot used by the army.

Here is the jumping robot video:

Manipulasi BN Kalahkan Kuasa Rakyat?

Harakah
Ahmad Lutfi

“Mampukah Pakatan halang penipuan daftar pemilih?

Check if Email Address Exist or Valid at Email-Checker.com

When I got to know about Gmail, my first selection of username is obviously raymond@gmail.com but then the registration page reports that “Someone already has that username” so I had to choose another username. I was shocked to know that Google actually reserves the username Raymond because I just found out that the username is still not yet being taken! One logical way to test whether an email address is valid or not is by sending a test email to the recipient email address. If the email bounces back immediately, then it means that the email address is not valid while if you’re not getting anything in return after waiting for a few minutes, then the email address probably exist.

I tried sending a test email to raymond@gmail.com and within a couple of seconds I got a response from Mailer Daemon saying that “The email account that you tried to reach does not exist”. Even if I work for Google, I don’t think they will allow me to use the username raymond@gmail.com because they would require me to register my last name in the username. Anyway, other than sending a test email to check the email address validity, an alternative better method is to verify the email address at Email-Checker.com

There are a few other online services that offers email address verification but I find that Email-Checker.com is more accurate and superior when compared with its competitors. One good example is most online email checkers fails to check Yahoo email address validity because Yahoo servers always states that the checked email address is always a valid email address. However I’ve tested a couple of valid and invalid Yahoo email address at Email-Checker.com and somehow it is able to determine if the Yahoo email address is valid or not.

To verify an email address validity with Email-Checker.com, visit Email-Checker.com’s webpage located from the link at the end of this article, enter the email address that you want to check at the “Enter an email to try it” box and click the “verify” button. Within seconds you will get a popup with the result.

Email Checker Online

It is able to report if the email is:

  • Valid – email address passes all tests.
  • Invalid – email address does not exist.
  • Unknown – domain accepts all requests.
  • Unknown – email is disposable email address (DEA).
  • Unknown – email is grey listed – try again in 5 mins.
  • Unknown – email cannot be verified (other reasons).
  • Checking a single email address at Email-Checker.com is always free but if you need to verify a list of email address in batches automatically, then they do offer a few paid packages to serve that purpose.

At The Cusp of History: Anwar Offers Hope to a Malaysia Fed up With a Corrupt BN

    Malaysia Chronicle

If Prime Minister Najib Razak, whose hold on the nation seems to be unraveling by the day, hoped to demoralize Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim with a barrage of gutter politicking launched through the mainstream media controlled by his Umno party, he would be badly mistaken.

Anwar, rated as the most outstanding Malay leader to emerged in recent times, showed his fighting spirit at a ceramah or political lecture in Bangi on Thursday night. A charismatic orator, Anwar sizzled the crowd with his no-holds-barred speech.

“Do you think I’m like Najib? I went to jail but when they opened the door, I fought. I went to jail and got thrashed but after I fixed my back, I fought. Lawan tetap lawan!” Anwar told a rapturous crowd of nearly 1,000.

    At the cusp of history

A former student leader, Anwar was a keen Muslim activist before he was persuaded to join Umno by the former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad. He rose through the ranks with lightning speed and before his persecution in 1998, was the Deputy Prime Minister cum Finance Minister. Alarmed by Anwar’s growing clout, Mahathir imprisoned him on trumped-up sodomy and corruption charges, and it was only after the ham-fisted leader’s retirement in 2003 that the Federal Court dared to throw out the charges and acquit Anwar.

Today, Anwar is sitting at cusp of history. Many expect him to pick up where he left off in 14 years ago and finally assume the premier-ship of the country – a post that until now has no worthy alternative candidate. Even Mahathir had to admit that Umno now lacked talent and that the Opposition these days is “not like that of the past and the current situation is rather confusing.”

Indeed, after sacking and jailing Anwar, Mahathir got rid off all those who dared to challenge him, promoting the likes of Abdullah Badawi and Najib Razak. Even before Anwar, Mahathir was averse to competition and schemed and plotted the downfall of other strong Malay leaders of calibre such as Musa Hitam and Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

Obviously, Mahathir’s decision to go for the mediocre in order to safeguard his own power has harmed Umno and the BN coalition it leads. Abdullah was forced to accept early retirement in 2009 after losing 5 of the country’s 13 states in the 2008 election to the Pakatan Rakyat opposition led by Anwar. Abdullah’s 6-year tenure was undistinguished and lacklustre.

    Anwar vs Najib: Starkly different

Worse still is Najib’s administration, which has been pockmarked some of the worst social turmoil the country has ever seen. Advised by his team of strategists to take a strong hand against Anwar, Najib’s solution for turning public sentiment against his arch rival is to concoct a barrage of smear campaigns led by shady personalities including Senator S Nallakaruppan, Senator Ezam Mohd Noor and Ummi Hafilda. It has not worked and in fact boomeranged badly, but known for his vanity, Najib has refused to admit it and change tactics.

Even so, Anwar has not allowed himself to slum down to Najib’s gutter politicking, instead issuing at least 3 official challenges to Najib to debate about the economy and the general state of the nation in a moderated televised public debate. So far, Najib has refused to acknowledge the debate invitations, and for his cowardice, he has dropped further in the esteem of the public even as the nation heads towards the next general election.

Najib’s mandate will end in March 2013 and he has hinted he will call for GE-13 very soon. But ‘very soon’ to Najib has been a shifting target, changing from July 2011 to November 2011 and thence to March-April 2012 to May-June 2012. And now, the latest speculated date is September 2012.

This, as Anwar pointed out, only underscored that beneath Najib’s bullying ways, he knew the people were not behind him and the Umno-BN may lose the federal government to the opposition, the first regime change Malaysia would see in 55 years.

“The prime minister doesn’t understand the suffering of the junior officers who serve the government. I know suffering, what it means to be insulted and beaten every day. I know,” said Anwar.

    Fire still burns strong

Now 64, Anwar does not seem to have lost any of the fire in the belly that distinguished from other student leaders in his youth. His passion to end the feudalistic system of politics promulgated by the elitist Umno still rages strong. He condemned the endemic corruption in Umno and the BN government, the lack of leadership in the economy and warned of a severe financial crunch if the people did not vote for change and reforms.

In particular, Anwar slammed Najib for the recent slew of mega deals favoring BN cronies that have been pushed through by the Finance ministry, purportedly to cash out in case the BN lost to Pakatan in GE-13.

“A leader must be brave to defend his leadership, not focus on red carpets. Those are just the trappings of power. You are a leader, and so you must be responsible for your policies and answer my questions. This country is rich but the income gap between the wealthy and poor continues to widen,” said Anwar.

Anwar reiterated his debate challenge to Najib so that the Malaysian public could envision and evaluate for themselves the sort of future they wanted, and which could be offered by the Pakatan and BN respectively.

“Face me if you are a real fighter,” said Anwar, throwing the gauntlet once again to Najib.

Audit Bebas Kepincangan Daftar Pemilih Kesan

    Malaysiakini

    Let's Zombie-ing Around With Cranberries!

Who can forget the chorus of their song-Zombie~Zombie~Zombie~Ei~Ei~Ei? It's like one of the most addictive songs I have ever heard in my entire life. Who else can beathe life into Zombie better than the band Cranberries? Surprisingly this song has nothing to do with the undead rising from their graves like in MJ's Thriller nor it has anything to do with the infected citizens of Racoon City. Zombie is a heart-warming song that touches the souls of millions of people who love peace. Zombie teaches us to make love and not war.

    Photobucket
Who can forget them? The Zombies who eat cranberries. :p

Cranberries' Zombie is about how wars have destroyed the lives of innocent people. It's about how the people in war-ravaged countries have to suffer the physical and emotional pain of losing someone they love. Zombie tells about wars which do not seem to have ending, which keep on devouring the souls of people who are involved in it. It's like they are slowly losing their humanity...their thirst for blood, revenge and power has turned them into...Zombies at the expense of other innocent lives.

    Photobucket
    Make love please...no war...

So to me...Cranberries' Zombie fronted by the rockalicious Dolores O'Riordan, is like one of the legendary songs that people in my era should listen to before they, themselves turn into...zombies-dead~lar! Now we Malaysians, have the opportunity to watch Cranberries live in Malaysia at Stadium Negara on the 4th of April 2012. Do you know that Cranberries is arguably one of the most successful rock band in the 90s with more than 15millions albums sold in the US alone. So who wanna join me and become one of the zombies to linger in their concert?

    Photobucket
    Dolores O'Riordan belting out~Zombie~Zombie~Zombie~Ei~Ei!

Most importantly don't miss Cranberries in action while they are here in Malaysia ok? Let's learn how to be Zombie again by singing our "anthem", shall we?

Let's watch and sing Zombie together!

    ~Cranberries' Zombie Lyrics~
Another head hangs lowlyChild is slowly takenAnd the violence cause of silenceWho are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my familyIn your head, in your head they are fightingWith their tanks and their bombsAnd their bombs and their gunsIn your head, in your head, they are crying

In your head, in your headZombie, zombie, zombieHey, hey, heyWhat's in your head, in your headZombie, zombie, zombie?Hey, hey, hey, heyOh, do, do, dou, do, do, dou, do, doDou, do, do, dou, dou, do, do, dou

Another mother's breakin'Heart is taking overWhen the violence 'causes silenceWe must be mistaken

It's the same old theme since 1916In your head, in your head they're still fightingWith their tanks and their bombsAnd their bombs and their gunsIn your head, in your head they are dying

In your head, in your headZombie, zombie, zombieHey, hey, heyWhat's in your head, in your headZombie, zombie, zombie?Hey, hey, hey, heyOh, oh, oh oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, yaa, yaa

So how do you feel now? Very energetic right? Do you the inside of your burning right now? Do you feel like you are losing your senses and you are turning into a zombie? I don't...but I am sure you will be listening and singing to this song again and again these few days because it is~In Your Head~In Your Head~Zombie~Zombie~Zombie~Ei~Ei!

Sharing some episodes of ROAD TO AFA that I directed

This is very late, since the Asian Film Awards ended two weeks ago. So you probably already knew that the Oscar-winning A SEPARATION was the night's major winner. (full results here)

But I haven't been updating this blog much these days, so please bear with me.

You might remember that I mentioned directing a series of interviews with a few major Japanese film figures last month while suffering from a hideous food poisoning as part of the ROAD TO AFA (Asian Film Awards) program hosted by Janet Hsieh. A month earlier, in January, I was in Taipei for these interviews.

I didn't exactly blog about my Taipei escapades, so I'll post up some of my old tweets related to it.

Flying off to Taipei at 7:20am tomorrow morning. Which means that I have to catch the first (4:30ish) JR train. Directing some interviews

    — Edmund Yeo (@greatswifty) January 14, 2012

Here are the first three interviewees, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Tom Lin (director of STARRY STARRY NIGHT) and Eric Lin (star of STARRY STARRY NIGHT), regarding the Past and Present of Taiwan Films.

After that, I interviewed SEEDIQ BAAL team: director Wei Te-Sheng, cinematographer Chin Ting-Chang and actor Umin Boya regarding the beliefs of filmmakers. The interview was conducted in Wei's office. He's just such a cool and great guy.

After shooting Seediq Baal director Wei Te-Sheng's interview, we had a wondrous feast. Love Taipei! instagr.am/p/hE_kK/

    — Edmund Yeo (@greatswifty) January 14, 2012

The JUMP ASHIN! team, producer Lee Lieh, cast members Lawrence Ko (eventual Best Supporting Actor winner) and Lin Chen-Xi (whom I met a few times before at the Pusan and Tokyo Film Festivals at 2010, back then I referred to her by her nick name Lin Zaizai) spoke about the passion of Taiwanese.

Actress Guey Lun Mei (nominated as Best Supporting Actress for Tsui Hark's FLYING SWORDS AT DRAGON GATE) and YOU'RE THE APPLE OF MY EYE lead actor Ko Chen-Tung, along with Hou Hsiao Hsien again, give some insight on the mysterious relationship between directors and actors.

So there you go, those were the Taiwanese episodes.

    Here are the Japanese ones.

Directors Yoji Yamada and Hirokazu Kore-eda speak about Japanese films about familial relationships.

After that, Yoji Yamada join directors Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Sono Sion, along with actor Ihara Tsuyoshi (LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA) to talk about Japanese films on the international stage.

Finally, Ihara Tsuyoshi and actresses Meisa Kuroki and Satomi Ishihara speak about recent manga adaptations and horror films that had always been popular among Japanese films.

Aside from some coursework back in 2006 for my Graduate Diploma in Media Production classes at Murdoch University, I have never actually "directed" any interviews before, especially those with the talking head format. So it was exceptionally educational. Although the poor interviewees and my team had to occasionally suffer through my unorthodox style (of changing set-ups between questions in an interview), I'm glad everything came together in the end. Was very grateful for the opportunity.

There were still a number of other interviews done by the producers of ROAD TO AFA with the film people of Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, South Korea and Hong Kong which are worth a look. So go and visit the AFA Youtube page if you're interested.

    Birthday? Present?

It was a fun night out with some friends at coffee shop. When one of them asked, what is the best gift as his girlfriend’s birthday presents. Reminded me that my birthday is near too :P

Anyway, I don’t always receive birthday, or even remember it. Many of my Facebook friends will notice that, I’ve never even say “Happy Birthday” on their wall. Because I don’t see any special thing there. But that doesn’t curse me for not getting greeting or present too :D

First, my girlfriend (now wife) gave me a beg while in college, I don’t know why, my wife LOVE transforming me to some fashion I don’t familiar with. Then again, my wife gave me a Gundam, spent my 5 hours assembling them.

Well, thinking back, birthday is better to be a personal thing than public thing… No?

Bitter Pill For Dr M: Old Foe Anwar Giving Him a Run For His Money in GE-13

    Malaysia Chronicle

Former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has admitted that it would be difficult to predict the results of the 13th general election due to the “confusing” signals received from the ground.

“What is certain, it won’t be easy for BN to get two-thirds majority this time. The opposition now is not like that of the past, and the current situation is rather confusing,” Bernama reported Mahathir as saying.

Such an acknowledgement must have been hard for Mahathir to make, given that the Pakatan Rakyat opposition coalition is led by Anwar Ibrahim, whom he has tried hard to chop down to size and even oust from the political arena completely.

In 1998, fearing Anwar’s popularity and growing clout with the Malays, Mahathir threw trumped-up sodomy and corruption charges at his his former deputy and succeeded in jailing Anwar for 6 years. It was only after Mahathir retired that the Federal Court could summon enough courage to overthrow the charges and acquit Awar.

Now 64, Anwar is poised to lead the Pakatan into its second general election as a coalition. Although denied formal registration by the Registrar of Societies, the Pakatan parties of PKR, PAS and DAP have signed a Common Policy Framework and agreed on a joint manifesto – the Buku Jingga – for GE-13.Meanwhile, GE-13 is expected to be held before the end of this year.

    Gaining strength

Since the 12th general election in 2008, the Pakatan has been gaining from strength to strength, with two of the four states it governs – Selangor and Penang – praised by the Auditor General as the best managed. Both Penang and Selangor have also drawn most FDI, trouncing the BN-ruled states.

A resurgent Anwar and Pakatan are now rated as having an even chance on improving on their 2008 electoral performance, with many pundits predicting they might even wrest the federal government from Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Mahathir apparently shares this view, saying that the various assumptions made about the support for BN were fluid, with some people saying it was increasing and others saying otherwise. Mahathir did not point the finger at anyone, but a day ago, he called on Najib to allow ‘outsiders’ to contest for seats under the Umno ticket.

Mahathir lamented the shortage of ‘smart’ Malays in Umno, a situation that perhaps he is most to blame for due to his refusal to soften his hardline stance during his 22-year rule from 1981 to 2003. Indeed, during his tenure, Malaysia experience huge ‘brain drain” including from the Malay community, but Mahathir had always dismissed the issue as minor and with a ‘let them leave if they wish’.

“None of Mahathir policies contributed to building a succession line in Umno, so what is there to say now. And the damage was not only to Umno but extended to the overall economy, where Malaysia lost talent beyond what it could afford. The effects on the economy are being played out now and if not reversed soon by fresh policies and reforms, we can expect further all-encompassing deterioration,” Ramon Navaratnam, the chairman of the Centre for Public Policy Studies, told Malaysia Chronicle.

    Najib failed to deliver

In recent weeks, former Finance minister Daim Zainuddin had predicted BN would easily win in only three states – Johor, Melaka and Pahang. A large portion of the blame has been directed at Najib for failing to lead Umno-BN out of its quagmire.

Umno appointed Najib as their president in 2009 after forcing his predecessor Abdullah Badawi into early retirement for losing 5 states out of 13 to the Pakatan as well as the BN’s long-held two-thirds majority in Parliament.

Mahathir and other Umno leaders had hoped that Najib would reverse the slide and regain the crucial two-thirds majority, which would allow them to amend key laws to stay in power for perhaps a few more decades. But Najib’s clumsy political maneuvers were soon rejected by the people, who now see him as a fraud.

In his comments, it was telling for Daim to point out that if Najib failed to improve on Badawi’s results, he would have to step down in favor of either his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin or a ‘new challenger’. So far, no dark horse has emerged but bets are on that it could be Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who has lambasted Najib for his uneven-handed policies and lack of leadership.

During Najib’s tenure which began in April 2009, Malaysia suffered its worst bouts of racial and religious intolerance. Extremist groups such as Perkasa and Jati were fostered and allowed to flourish. At the same time, Najib preached policies of moderation to the West. But it looks like even they have found him out, with the influential Washington Post slamming him as a “champion of double-talk”.

Nonetheless, even with his mandate to rule expiring in March 2013, Najib has continued with the same strategies of gutter politicking against Anwar, using racism and religious bigotry to scare the Malays into voting for Umno so that it can ‘protect’ them from the non-Malays.

Meawhile, the economy remains neglected and soft due to Najib’s frequent overseas trips which have been criticized for burning a hole in taxpayers’ pockets.

Corruption remains at a record high, with Malaysia slipping 4 spots to 60 in the 2011 Transparency International Corruption Perception Index. Malaysia scored 4.3 compared to New Zealand, the least corrupt at 9.5, and Somalia and North Korea who each scored 1.0, making them the two most corrupt nations in the survey. In ASEAN, Singapore scored 9.3 and Brunei 6.3.

Ketua Pembangkang: Pakatan Rakyat Sedia Ganti Anwar Dengan Najib Selepas PRU-13

    Harakah

Anwar: Real Leaders Fight For The People, Not Cronies

    The Malaysian Insider

True leaders must have the courage to act in the best interests of the people to ensure the cost of living remains reasonable, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said yesterday.

Focusing on the economy and rising cost of living, the opposition leader stressed that a prime minister should do what is best for the public, not pander to “cronies” who benefited from lopsided deals with the government at the expense of the people.

Anwar gets up close and personal at last night’s ceramah in Bangi. — Picture by Yow Hong Chieh
He charged that Datuk Seri Najib Razak let vested interests gouge the people through deals such as power production agreements with independent producers and the MAS-AirAsia share swap as the latter was “afraid” to fight for what was right.

“Do you think I’m like Najib? I went to jail but when they opened the door, I fought. I went to jail and got thrashed but after I fixed my back, I fought. Lawan tetap lawan!” he said to cheers from over 700 supporters at Stadium MPKJ here.

Walking among the crowd with a wireless microphone in hand, the PKR de facto chief also challenged Najib yet again to debate him on policy matters, taunting the Umno president: “Face me if you are a real fighter.”

“A leader must be brave to defend his leadership, not focus on red carpets… Those are just the trappings of power,” he said.

“You are a leader, and so you must be responsible for your policies and answer my questions… This country is rich but the income gap between the wealthy and poor continues to widen.”

Najib has so far declined to debate with the opposition leader.

Anwar said Najib has consistently failed to consider the “suffering” of low-income earners, citing the latter’s volte face on the new government servant pay scheme as an example of his inability to understand the people.

The former deputy prime minister also questioned why Najib had resorted to consultants in coming up with the new pay scheme instead of asking the civil service what it wanted.

“The prime minister doesn’t understand the suffering of the junior officers who serve the government.

“I know suffering, what it means to be insulted and beaten every day. I know,” he said, alluding to his six-year stint in prison following his arrest and conviction for sodomy, which was later overturned by the courts.

Anwar concluded the night with a ditty characterising the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition as “poison” and urging those in the audience to vote for Pakatan Rakyat (PR):

“Madu di tangan kanan mu: Pakatan. Racun di tangan kiri mu: BN. I dah tahu mana satu pilihan ku. (Honey in your right hand: Pakatan. Poison in your left hand: BN. I know what my choice is.)”

Monitor File Operations with Windows Explorer Tracker

When you use Windows, performing file operations become second nature. Copy or delete a file and thinking nothing of it, carry on with your tasks. The problem arises when the file or folder you might be looking for isn’t where you thought it was. Perhaps you renamed it, moved it or accidentally deleted it. Maybe another person who also uses your computer like a relative has unwittingly done something with it.

A useful little utility to have around is Windows Explorer Tracker. What it does as the name suggests, is monitor a number of file operations in Windows Explorer, displays them in its window and records them in a log file. Things like deleting, renaming and creating files and folders is actively watched so you can go back and see what actions have been taking place.

Other useful features are the program will record when drives and storage media like USB sticks are inserted or removed, and you can also record file operations on a remote host by using the option to Map a network drive.

The program is pretty easy to set up and use, just download and install it. You will initially be greeted with a blank lower window until file operations in Explorer start to happen.

    When the main window starts to collect data, it will give information such as;
    Date and time of action
The action performed (delete, create, add, remove etc)
The object type being logged (file, folder, driver)
    The path of the action
The original / new file name to log renaming

A quick tip: To get the file extension to display in the name columns such as .zip .exe, you need to have ‘Hide extensions for known file types’ unticked in the Explorer folder options. Open an Explorer window >> click on the ‘Organize’ menu >> click on ‘Folder and search options’ >> goto the ‘View’ tab >> untick ‘Hide extensions for known file types’.

To view any logs, click on ‘Manage log files’ and a window will open with folders split into year / month. Inside those folders, will be numbered log files corresponding to the day of the month so you can search through the log history for an exact day.

If you wish to view any previous history log in the program, simply click on ‘History’ and select the date range from the dropdown calendars.

Double clicking on a line or clicking ‘Detail View’ will bring up the selected file operation in an easier to read window. The arrows cycle through the current log line by line (<>) or go to the top / bottom of the displayed log (|<>|).

The ‘Options’ window is pretty light on content, only allowing for altering of the format for which to display the date and time in the log.

Overall, Windows Explorer Tracker is a very useful utility for keeping an eye on who, or what has been has been performing file operations on your own, or a networked system. It may not be as comprehensive as something like Sysinternals Process Monitor, but is good at what it does.

    Sony Alpha NEX 5n + Sony CLM-V55 + Kipon NIK/SEL Adaptor + Voigtlander Grip + Hakuba L plate

Block Windows Shutdown, Restart or Logoff When Disc or USB Drive is Attached

I find it very annoying when I totally forgotten that my USB flash drive is attached to the USB port located at the back of the desktop and only realizing it when I get home, or when I borrowed a software installation disc from my company and forgot to return it back. Using the “forgot” excuse in a working environment can be quite embarrassing and shows how inefficient you are. One solution to prevent that from happening again is to use a software called Free USB Guard that will block the Windows from being shut down which will indirectly inform me that a CD or USB flash drive is still attached to the computer. This method offers me a last chance to remove the disc or USB flash drive from the computer if I needed to.

Free USB Guard is a free and portable tool that is capable of blocking Windows shutdown, logoff and restart process when it detects a flash drive (or another external drive) is attached or a disc is present in the dvd reader. The only user interface that you will see is when it blocks the shutdown process telling you if there is a disc left in the dvd reader or there are still some USB drives connected. If you still want to shut down the computer without removing the USB drive or disc, then you can click on the Shutdown button at the Free USB Guard warning window. There is also a Standby, Hibernate and Restart option but unfortunate there is no logoff button.

    USB Guard Tray Icon

By default the Free USB Guard only monitor the presence of USB flash drives but not the CD/DVD disc left in reader or burner. Monitoring of disc can be easily enabled by right clicking on the Free USB Guard icon located at the notification area, go to Monitor the presence of these drives and click on the CD/DVD disc left in reader/burner option. You may also want to set the Free USB Guard to autostart with Windows because it needs to be running in order to block Windows from shutting down when there are disc or USB drive connected to the computer.

    USB Guard Tray Icon

Free USB Guard is a donationware, meaning that it is free to use without any limitations but any amount of donation to support the program is much appreciated. It is compatible with Windows XP / Vista / 7 on both 32 & 64 bit and requires .NET Framework 2.0 to run.

SP: Make That Call Day 31 March

I just got off the phone with my wife, thankfully she is doing well over there. She was asking me whether it’s a good idea to come back during winter or not. It’s cold, grey and slippery. Not really pleasant I assure you. It’s also been a while she updated her blog.

Anyway, a few weeks back I wrote about The Crying Girl, it went on air a few days after that post. This is sort of like a continuity advertisement by Celcom. Short clips were revealed bit by bit, teasing viewers to the edge of the seat.

Question: What made the girl upset?

Celcom badged the 31st of March as Make That Call Day! A day where you call your family, closes friends, peers, long lost childhood friend and office mates, rekindling the long lost spirit and it may change your course of life. Don’t be like the couple in the short clips, a simple call would’ve solved everything. After all, what is a minute worth?

    ps: This is an advertorial.

FLYFM PARANOID ACTIVITY – WEEK 1

Are you BOLD enough to face your fears?

work life balance fear FLYFM PARANOID ACTIVITY WEEK 1

If you still remember the show ‘Fear Factor‘ on TV where contestants had to complete extreme stunts, consume gross creature crawlies, face their nightmare experiences all in one show; now we have a somewhat similar local version of it and it’s on national radio.

FlyFM Paranoid Activity (co-organized by New Straits Times) offers up to RM40,000 for contestants who bid for the daring challenges each day to overcome their fears.

FlyFM LoL mainhighlight parnoid mh 326239135 FLYFM PARANOID ACTIVITY WEEK 1

That’s a pretty huge amount of cash, eyh? Who says facing your fears isn’t worth it?

Here are some of the challenges during the past week:

Challenge 1 : FlyFM Paranoia’s Next Top Model

Zuhaili won the lowest bid at RM2 to take on the very first challenge of FlyFM Paranoid Activity.

His challenge was to pose in front of the camera… with reptiles/creatures! He seemed pretty comfortable with all the geckos, snakes and all because apparently he works in Sunway Lagoon Wildlife Park. However, he’s really afraid of spiders (hehe..)

At the end of the day, he managed to complete the challenge. Not only he got himself his RM2, but he also got an extra RM1000 for being double dared and being so sporting with the tasks although he has arachnophobia (fear of spiders)!

    .

Challenge 2 : FlyFM Brew of the Day

Chef Shamsudin blended a mixture of chicken liver, oats, milk, wasabi, milo, and egg plant for Sunny, FlyFM Paranoid Activity’s second contestant. The starting amount to bid was RM9500 and he won the bid for RM95.8! He thinks he can get it through easily just because he bid for 95.8 (FlyFM radio frequency)? Ha ha ha.

    .

Challenge 3 : FlyFM Sniper on the Loose

As for this challenge, the contestant has to evade himself from being hit by the paintball. He has to run for his life and will lose RM100 for every shot he has on his body.

Muhammad Aizad took the challenge and he tried 5 times and failed. And as usual being the generous radio station, the FlyFM peeps decided to give him a second chance! He managed to go through 50m on a bumpy ground and walked home RM1000 richer on that day! Worth it, yes?

The lowest bidder of the day will be the one that gets to execute the challenge. Bidding closes at 7pm daily, and another round will begin the next day.

That’s not all! Every Friday, there’ll be an unexpected Mystery Friday revealed in New Straits Times. Listeners have to grab a copy of the newspaper to find out what the challenge and starting price is, and the search for the lowest bidder will continue on air. The 5 lowest bidders at the end of each week will take on their fears on the ground, and must successfully complete the challenge that they bid for to walk away with that cash cow!

Will Not Comment On Penang UMNO Youth’s Repeated Lies But Will Take Defamatory Court Action (en/bm/cn)

Will Not Comment On Penang UMNO Youth’s Repeated Lies But Will Take Defamatory Court Action To Prevent UMNO, Utusan Malaysia and others BN papers From Playing With Fire By Stoking Racial And Religious Sentiments To Undermine The PR Penang State Government.

I will not comment on Penang UMNO Youth’s repeated lies but will take defamatory court action to prevent UMNO, Utusan Malaysia and others BN papers from playing with fire by stoking racial and religious sentiments to undermine the PR Penang state government. I had tried to be patient when UMNO uses racial and religious rhetoric to undermine my leadership of Penang and the PR state government. But such dangerous and religious political games have crossed the limit with lies by Penang UMNO Youth chief Shaik Hussein Mydin that I have sold off mosque land.

Utusan Malaysia has even printed vulgar and defamatory words attacking me with the lie that I have sold off mosque land. This is not the first time that UMNO has made defamatory allegations against me. Before that Shaik Hussein together with other UMNO leaders had attacked me with lies that I did not sell 102.6 acres of Bayan Mutiara land by open tender. He had continued with such lies even though the Penang state government and the developer had shown proof that the land was sold by open tender.

Shaik then continued with his lies that I had said that I did not need the support of Indians. When his lie was exposed, Shaik not only refused to apologise as promised but changed to another lie that I have caused mosque land to disappear. This time, the lie is explosive because it touches on religious sentiments and designed to create hatred amongst Muslims against me as a non-Muslim leader.

When the 102.3 acres of Bayan Mutiara land was sold by open tender, there was no sub-division of title but the entire piece is to be sold. The developer will only do sub-division of title after submission of new plans to MPPP for approval. The new plans and sub-division of title has not even been submitted, how can UMNO claim that the mosque or school land has been sold or disappeared? UMNO must remember that there are standard requirements for school and places of religious places of worship including surau or mosque that are compulsory by local government or must be included in any development project.

UMNO can only say that the mosque or school land has been sold or disappeared if the new plans by the developer are approved by MPPP without any mosque land or school land. As a people-centric government, PR Penang has consistently held on to our fundamental principle of NOT allowing any land that has been allocated or marked for school, places of religious worship, mosque, suraus, churches, Chinese, Hindu or Buddhist temples to disappear.

By consistently telling lies and even stoking racial and religious tension, UMNO is creating racial and religious hatred against me as Chief Minister and the PR state government. Creating hatred against a non-Malay and non-Muslim based on lies shows that 1 Malaysia is an empty slogan designed to deceive the people to vote in the coming general elections for race-based extremist parties in BN.
    LIM GUAN ENG

    —-BM Version—-
Kenyataan Akhbar oleh Ketua Menteri Pulau Pinang Lim Guan Eng di Komtar, George Town pada 29.3.2012

Tidak Akan Komen Mengenai Fitnah Pemuda UMNO Pulau Pinang Yang Berulang-Ulang Tetapi Akan Mengambil Tindakan Mahkamah Untuk Mencegah UMNO, Utusan Malaysia Dan Akhbar-Akhbar Lain Daripada Mengapi-Apikan Sentimen Perkauman Dan Agama Untuk Melemahkan Kerajaan Negeri PR Pulau Pinang.

Useful Environment Variables in Windows 7

Windows comes with a few environment variables by default to assist batch files or programs in accessing the important location on the hard drive because not all Windows are installed in C drive, probably the temporary folder is set to a different location and etc. A variable is surrounded by percent sign % on both sides and one example is %WinDir% which will output the directory where Windows is installed on the hard drive. You can type the variable at the address bar in Windows Explorer, in the Run box or at the Search programs and files bar in the Start menu and hitting the Enter key will directly open the location in Explorer. The environment variables are not fixed as you can use the SET command to create, modify or delete the variables.

You can find out all the environment variables in your Windows by launching the command prompt (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt), type set and followed by hitting the Enter key.

    SET display variables

The most common environment variables that I use very often are %LOCALAPPDATA% and %APPDATA% because nowadays a lot of data are stored in that location by third party software such as the Firefox profile, Chrome, Opera, uTorrent and etc. Basically both of the variables points to the current user’s application data folder except one is LOCAL and the other is ROAMING. By typing the variable in the run box, it instantly brings me to that location instead of double clicking through a few folders to get the Application Data folder.

Other than that, AppData folder is a hidden folder and using environment variables allows me to directly open the hidden folder without going through the hassle of enabling show hidden files, folders and drives in Folder Options and then disabling it back when I am done with the troubleshooting.

I explained to him in great length that I am pissed off, after all, I do have a data plan, why the hell would I need an FB sms update? That’s plain stupid. He told me, he can’t refund. That’s so fucking stupid! I know it’s only a small amount to be creating a fuss, but I fucking hate companies that cheat for money.

I may be a victim of RM 5, but think about the other 10 million users? What if 10% are victims like me? thats RM 5 million of money.

Despite all this, the call center guy was really polite.

Selamat Pagi Islamabad, Dah Lama Takde Langit Biru Awan Gemawan Ni | Islamabad, Pakistan

Live Update: 29 Mar ’12, 9.00am PKT | From: iPhone 4 via Maxis MY & Mobilink PK | Author: KNizam

How I wish today is Saturday lah kan!

Maher Zain – Number One For Me | Official Music Video

I was a foolish little child
Crazy things I used to do
And all the pain I put you through
Mama now I’m here for you
For all the times I made you cry
The days I told you lies
Now it’s time for you to rise
For all the things you sacrificed

    Chorus:
Oh, if I could turn back time rewind
If I could make it undone
    I swear that I would
I would make it up to you
Mum I’m all grown up now
    It’s a brand new day
I’d like to put a smile on your face every day
Mum I’m all grown up now
    And it’s not too late
I’d like to put a smile on your face every day

    And now I finally understand
    Your famous line
About the day I’d face in time
‘Cause now I’ve got a child of mine
And even though I was so bad
I’ve learned so much from you
Now I’m trying to do it too
Love my kid the way you do

    CHORUS

You know you are the number one for me (x3)
Oh, oh, number one for me
There’s no one in this world that can take your place
Oh, I’m sorry for ever taking you for granted, ooh
I will use every chance I get
To make you smile, whenever I’m around you
Now I will try to love you like you love me
Only God knows how much you mean to me

    CHORUS

You know you are the number one for me (x3)

Oh, oh, number one for me
