Happy Belated Birthday Cheeky!

Cheeky the cat with phone

Hello! Hello! Cheeky celebrated his first birthday yesterday. I read that one human year is equivalent to fifteen for a cat on the first year, five for the second year and four for subsequent years. Cheeky is fifteen years old already in cat years. He sure is growing up to be a handsome teenager. Happy birthday our dear feline friend.

Questions - will OTK present Ministerial statement on PwC report to Parliament followed by parliamentary debate on RM12.5 billion PKFZ Rip-off?

Kingyo's test screening at Fuyajo Cinema Festival in Shinjuku Wald 9

The work-in-progress version of Kingyo finally had its test screening at the Fuyajo Cinema Festival in Wald 9 last night (or technically, this morning, since it was screened at 12am)

A couple of the cast and crew came.

I was happy to see main actress Luchino Fujisaki again. We just ran into each other at the elevator.

Here's a photo of her with Maiko the Producer and I.

Kingyo producer Maiko and star Luchino Fujisaki

With Luchino

(Luchino also had a brief blog entry about her thoughts just before the screening. It's in Japanese though)

We then took a group photo, this time with Lia the Artist/ Asst Director/ Production Designer's much nicer camera.

Group photo before test screening of Kingyo
(back row from left to right: Maiko the Producer, the musician Koh Ishibashi who played the street musician in KINGYO, and Kawamura-san who generously lent us his house for the shoot.

front row from left to right: Luchino the star, me, and Lia the Artist/ Asst Director/ Production Designer)

It was also a pleasant surprise to see many others attending the screening for support, like Keiko, whom I haven't met for a year, and also the elderly Tatsumi Dorm manager (I thought he was kidding when he said he would come, he wasn't) Jason was there too, along with his friend Alex. Maiko had many friends who came along, even her mom and sister were there. Of course, the entire gang from Ando's Lab (that's where I'm in at Waseda) were present too.

I guess the screening went pretty smoothly. Spotted some stuff that we had to work on with the sound, but other than that, I was really surprised to hear the sound of applause during the end credits since audiences were quite silent during the films that aired before KINGYO.

The festival ended at 6:30 in the morning. I went back with Maiko so I could say hello to her mom, who left after the KINGYO screening.

Maiko's Mom gave me her homemade cookies.

Maiko's mom's homemade cookies

Maiko's mom's homemade cookie is delicious

They were mindblowingly delicious! (finished eating the entire packet before I started to type out this blog post)

(I hope I can get my hands on the photos of me during the Q and A session)

How to accumulate capital for business or investments

Everybody knows that to start a business or to start investing, you need capital (in Bahasa Melayu, modal). This issue of finding capital to start with is also one of the reasons why many people do not invest nor save nor start a business.

Do these excuses apply to you:

1. “I have no savings at all to buy unit trusts”
2. “What’s left over from my salary at the end of the month is so meagre that I shouldn’t be bothering about investing.”
3. “Invest? Business? Are you kidding me? I barely have enough money to keep myself going.”

To start, let’s make it clear. There will never be enough money to invest or even form a business. However, we, humans, the breadwinner, have the power. We are the decision-makers. The issue of “not having enough money” is only in our minds.

The solution is simple. Make sure there’s enough money to plow into investments/businesses. How? Use the thing that sits between the tight few inches between our ears, my dad says. In other words, use our brain. Be creative.

If you are working and rely on your salary, try working out your budget. Try cutting down things that are unnecessary. Make sure your inflows are much more than your outflows. Don’t even be tempted to load up your credit cards. Bad debts are bad. Money will be enough if you make it enough. Cut down on those luxuries. Hey, who said journey of wealth creation is easy?

If it’s still not enough, then it’s time to get creative!

Let me share you a story that was told by a succesful property investor here in Australia. When he first started in real estate investment, he didn’t have any capital as well. He had a look at a land that he wanted and thought that it was a good deal. Problem is, he didn’t have any spare money. He went to his family members but was turned down.

So, he got creative. He telephoned his accountant. He asked him whether or not anybody he knows got money lying around doing nothing. The accountant asked why, to which he replied, “I’ve encountered a really good land for sale with lots of potential. Problem is, I don’t have any spare cash right now.”

The accountant asked, “What are you trying to propose?”. He said “Well, ask that chap if I could borrow that money for a while. For that, I’m willing to pay that person 15% of interest per annum.”

The accountant did approach the dude and the rest is history. Money was loaned to the guy, to which he paid for the land, and 12 months later, the loan was paid back, and the guy made a truckload of money. What did he do to the land is a story for the future.

Keyword here is to be creative. Not to forget, the need to work hard. As they say, you need to work your ass off.

Some ways to find capital:

1. Your own savings
2. Loans from banks
3. Loans from family members/friends/governments/employers
4. EPF
5. Re-mortgaging homes (if you don’t know what you’re doing, then this is not a wise thing to do). A lot of people got screwed because of this.
6. Apart from normal salary, aim for side incomes through part time work, and etc.

There are thousands more ways on how to find capital. Take note that a lot of entrepreneurs, businessmen, and investors started with nothing as well.

As they say, when there is a will, there is a way.

Kalau nak seribu daya, kalau tak nak seribu dalih.

ORIGINAL POSTING

Observing politics and technology.

Three functions yesterday. I was invited to attend the PAS Muktamar in Shah Alam by day, and the official launch of Nokia N97 & OVI in Kuala Lumpur by night. There was a photoshoot of me by a multimedia content creator in between.

As I had prior constituency activities on Thursday evening, and the last flight to KL was around 10.45pm and the last function did not finish until 10.15am, I had to rise at 5am, get to the airport by 6am, get on the Firefly at 7.15am, touch down by 8.15am, check-out the luggage by 8.30am, and dash off to the Shah Alam Stadium. Grabbing for breath.

At the PAS Multamar

PAS Sect-Gen Kamaruddin Jaafar was making his welcoming speech by the time I got into the hall. Tok Guru Hadi's presidential speech was next.

Some observation in and outside the hall:

  • There was no longer rigid gender demarcation of seating arrangement. I was sitting next to a few Muslimats, who were seated next to Muslimins.
  • PAS delagates no longer came in green jubah and white skullcap. They were in multi-colours.
  • There were many 4-wheel drives and Mercerdes-Benzes and non-National cars outside. The only numberplate announced during the proceedings for blocking traffic was that of a "blue Mercedes-Benz" with a Penang insignia.
  • There was a keen contest for the party's No. 2 post, but there was no sign of campaign intensity among the delegates.
  • Pre-prepared, real-time synchronisation of slides summarising the presidential speech in Jawi and English.
  • Diplomatic corp comprising the usual suspects -- US, Australia, Singapore etc -- were sliced with the presence of leaders from HAMAS, who were given a token of RM150,000 raised through Harakah for the Palestinians' cause.
  • Malay anti-PPSMI literati like Hassan Ahmad and A. Samad Said were willing to appear on the stage to receive Anugerah Pejuang Bahasa from Tok Guru Hadi, an event culminating the efforts of other Malay literati like Professors Emeritus Abdullah Hassan, Nik Safiah Karim, Abu Bakar Abdul Hamid, and Dinsman.
  • Traditional (hardcore?) ulamas were obviously sidelined. Trouble for Nasharuddin Mat Isa for No. 2?
  • Harakah isnow beyond print and online, but in e-paper.
  • PAS will build a mammoth mixed development complex near Putrajaya as a commitment to capture the federal government in thenext general election.
  • PAS planned to spread its footprint and influence in Sabah and Sarawak through dakwah without first engaging the people there to understand their needs and wants.
  • Hadi describes modern ulamas as those who not only were religiously trained on the mosques and forms of islam, but ulamas can also be taken to mean scholars, professionals, activists and plain lay members.

All these, as multimedia gadgets incessantly project the theme of the Muktamar this year: Islam Memimpin Perubahan (Islam Leading Change).

There are two statements from PAS leaders which straightened my back, and which I thought were both wishful and partisanly encroaching:

  • Tok Guru Hadi said PAS will not compromise itself by subscribing to Umno's political culture of corruption and scandals, but will be too willing to engage with any parties on Unity Government, which was originally mooted for PAS's unilateral decision to engage Umno.
  • Hadi also said Pakatan Rakyat is positive towards Unity Government (see Malaysiakini TV). I doubt so. Or else my party seniors must have briefed us on this.
  • Husam Musa reportedly said the PM's post will be taken by PAS should the Opposition capture Putrajaya.

Talking in whispers again, I gathered from PAS friends that I have that the delegates are in favour of staying within the Pakatan Rakyat coalition rather than sleeping with BN, or essentially Umno.

Can Nasharuddin keep his job?

It looked clear that both Hadi Awang and Mustaffa Ali rooted for Nasha, the 2-term deputy chief whom I perceived as the bourgeois among PAS leaders.

I saw Mustaffa strategically station Nasha on the ground during the Bukit Gantang by-election. And Nasha brought along Hadi to visit each and every lunch table seating the senior leaders and observers.

Hadi did make a mention of Erdogan in his presidential speech, though. But he was making a reference to the liberal Turkish PM, Rejab Tayyeb Erdogan, and not liberals aligned to Husam Musa in the party.

But should Husam triumph, he should win only by a razor-thin majority, because Mat Sabu will wreak the spoiler effect to erode the constituencies of both his rivals. Moreover, Husam being cornered into Kelantan politics for years did not give him much room for rapport building nationally.

"PAS is here to replace Umno, not to complement it." I thought that was a strong statement that Husam and his team had underscore effectively.

Meanwhile, talking to my PAS friends on the sideline, it looked like a foregone conclusion that the three VP posts will go to former Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub, information chief Mahfuz Omar -- both are MPs -- and Pahang state chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS... PAS has changed its public orientation to capture new constituents while politically, retained and entrenched its core values that evolved after the fall of Shah of Iran. Have you DAP and PKR? Have Umno and BN?

I went home scratching the head, hence this delayed blog entry.

Technorati Ranking 101 - Claim Your Blog

ADVERTISEMENTS

I know this is a little back track but I notice that there are actually quite a lot of blogs that are pretty good in terms of alexa ranking, pagerank and also commentators but do not have technorati ranking. So I would like to educate others to do this as you may actually deserves to be in the Malaysia Top 100 Bloggers list.

Here is the steps:-

1. Click on “Claim your blog” button like the screen shot below

claim-your-blog

2. Then enter your url

3. The only tricky part is to get the code, you can actually copy the code and make a blog post under HTML view, or you could add a link.

For wordpress the name would be “Technorati Profile” and the Web Address fields would be something like “”http://technorati.com/claim/[code here]”

claim-technorati

As I only have 2 different counters to make my list, I cannot just simply not take technorati into account. Until I get my pagerank script to work, we will have to bear with this at the moment. Moreover, I think technorati is a good ranking to judge a blog ranking.

p/s: also you could claim your twitter account by twitting the link. But don’t feel that there is much use to that.

A Must-Bookmark for Steam Users

Part of Steam’s appeal must be its regular discounts and price drops. But with so many titles in the catalog, it can be easy to miss out on some of them.

freedom-pack

Yet that should now be practically impossible, thanks to the efforts of Steam forum user sciss0rz, who’s taken it upon himself to update other forum members with information on—you guessed it—the latest discounts and price drops on Steam! The list (found here) also includes information on Steam game packs, compilations of multiple titles that are usually available at a lower total price (sciss0rz does not list packs that represent no savings).

Even more important however is region availability. Lots of Steam customers have complained about the inconsistent availability of games worldwide. Specific games aren’t available in certain regions and countries, and you can see who misses out on what.

Nevertheless, the “Price Reduction and Sales!” thread is a very useful resource that any Steam user should bookmark. Heck, I’d even suggest making it your browser homepage, if only not to miss out on any new promos cooked up by Valve’s sales team.

Let’s just shoot them

The things that some Malaysian doctors can do to protect their interest never fail to amaze me. In trying to dissuade a patient from seeking treatment abroad, a doctor may go to the extend of commenting on the supposedly high financial cost, the patient’s age and vulnerability, and uncertainties.

In sum, such doctors would attack the patient’s weaknesses.

In contrary, Dr. Lekovic and Dr. Friedman would never know how much a surgey will cost and will rest the responsibility of finding out onto their assistance.

They would never hesitate to ask for help from other doctors when they are uncertain about something. I had been referred and sought a second opinion from Dr. Fukushima, Dr. Kondziolka, and Dr. Huang. Dr. Lekovic was also interested to hear what Dr. Leoffler had to say about my Gamma Knife concerns, and he was open to the knowledge that I had communicated with Dr. Spetzler about the Trigone meningioma surgical technique.

These doctors work at different hospitals all over the United States. None of them had ever formed conclusions on the basis of my financial background or my age. They were focused on considering the best course of treatment for me.

It’s really sad and frustrating when doctors pull the subject of money and personal background into the discussion when all a distraught NF patient wants, is to know whether the doctor in question has the ability to treat. Bring money and all that make the patient insecure, is adding salt to wound.

I think they should be shot.

Not for Blainism.

I am New-Agey, and proud of it. I don't think like how paranoid religious (mostly Christian) fundies think - that New Age concepts are satanic, and I don't get anal about mind-calming stuff like, Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Meditation. So when I stumble upon sites by religious researches claiming to study the 'rights and wrongs' of how a true believer of a certain One-True-God only should behave, I react quite badly towards all the bashing up of the New Age movement.

However, over the years I have grown to understand that many people in the more developed (and surprisingly, unexposed) western, 'I am better than you are' regions of the world consider thousand-year-old practices like Zen Buddhism and Yoga Meditation 'New Age', padahal the concepts within these teachings have been around far longer than both Jesus and Muhammad.

My peeve about the anti-Yoga conscience especially, is how their argument about 'why you cannot do Yoga' can get ridiculously illogical, as if when considering whether to redeem or not redeem these ancient practices, they've grown a mushroom in place of their neural cells. I don't know about you, but I have personally received many concerned e-mails about how yoga is crazy dangerous because it 'invokes the snake at the bottom of your spine', and the bible says the devil comes in the form of a serpent.

Or the other concern that, Yoga has this particular pose called the cobra, and you mimick the actions of a spine, and 'Why Christians must be careful not to pretend to be serpents like the cobra.'

Also the part where Christians who like Yoga anyway, and try to be apologetic about their choices, start writing about what they do during their yoga practice: 'I get a bit worried when the yoga teacher tells me to empty my mind. We cannot empty our minds as Christians, so I choose to think about Jesus when the teacher tells us to empty our minds. I thinks its better that way.'

All these apologizing and blaming doesn't seem in anyway spiritual or bible-loving, IMHO. I don't know about you, but I am hardly evangelized into a faith purely because I see miraculous actions, experience massive floods that kill millions, attend funerals and suddenly get worried over where I will go to after I die. I don't watch David Blaine levitate and get converted into Blainism, you know? Religion is pure man-made, God is in the realm of the spiritual, and I doubt that the currently available man-recorded conceptual understandings of yoga (or tai chi, or qi gong) will even bring us close to who God, or what God really is. Whether He is One or Three or Many, I'm of the belief that most of us have already made up our minds about that, or, that by the time we die, we'll have some sort of concept about who God is like. And that belief will take us to where we belong, and we'll have to just live with (or die with) whatever and where ever we end up.

I wonder what will the fundamentalists think when they realize at the end that reincarnation is the real deal? Will they struggle like mad, or will they be insistent that they now belong in hell?I

I really wonder.

R. I. P. David Carradine and Shih Kien (Shek Kin)

David Carradine in Kill Bill Shih Kien or Shek Kin

It's a little sad that I learned of both deaths within minutes of each other. David Carradine was found hanging in his hotel room at Bangkok (article here, either it was suicide or a sex game gone wrong). He was 72.

Shih Kien (or Shek Kin) died of kidney failure (Chinese article here). He was 96.

David Carradine is remembered by most as the star of the 1970s TV show KUNG FU, but I've never seen that, I only remember him more for the mid-90s 'sequel' KUNG FU: THE LEGEND CONTINUES, and of course, the KILL BILL films.

Bill's Superman speech in Kill Bill

As for Shih Kien, he's a HK screen icon who was known for playing villains. Western audiences may remember him more for playing the last baddie, the claw-wielding Han, in Bruce Lee's Enter The Dragon.

Enter The Dragon final fight

I remember reading a tweet last night regarding Carradine that said "Kung Fu masters don't die, they just kick ass in a different realm of existence." But for me, I'll apply the line to both Carradine and Shek Kin.

HP PSG Regional Media Event “Touch the future. Now.”

Last week, I was invited to join the HP’s “Touch the future. Now.” media summit in Beijing, China. It was a 2 days event.

LiewCF at HP PSG

The transports, accommodations, and meals were on HP. It’s also the 1st time I was invited to such a mass event.

What’s HP PSG?

HP PSG Regional Media Event is the annual Asia Pacific event where HP unveils their latest products.

HP PSG 2009 product launch
From left: Dennish Mark, Vice President, Desktop System Unit. Chua Hwee Koon, Vice President, Mobile Business Unit. See chin Teik, Senior Vice President, Personal Systems Group, Asia Pacific & Japan.

Some highlighted products this year are: HP Mini 110, HP Pavilion dv2, HP Pavilion Elite & Slimline, and, HP MS200 all-in-one PC.

HP Mini 110

I always wanted to get a netbook. The pink color (also available in Black and White colors) HP Mini 110 caught my eyes. The artistic pattern on the cover make it a perfect gift for your girlfriend.

HP mini 110 pink

Mini 110 is only 1.06KG and 1 inch thick, completed with standard netbook features. The new netbook has a sync feature which allows you to sync content with your primary PC.

What surprised me is the price of HP Mini 110. It’s only US$299 (~RM1043)! (Malaysia’s price is yet to confirm)

HP Pavilion dv2

If you need a powerful yet affordable notebook, the HP Pavillion dv2 might be your choice.

hp pavilion dv2

Weighing only 1.64KG, HP Pavilion dv2 is powered by dual core processor, ATI Radeon X1250 graphics with 64MB memory (or ATI Mobility Radeon HP Premium Graphics 3410 with 512MB dedicated memory). Retail price: US$699

HP Pavilion MS200 All-in-One Desktop PC

When I first saw HP Pavilion MS200 All-in-One desktop PC, I can’t help but thought of my Apple iMac.

hp pavilion ms200

The all-in-one PC looks very much like the Apple iMac, everything build into the monitor. The screen size is 18.5″. You only need a power cable to setup it, which also means you can move the PC easily anytime anywhere in your house. The price tag is US$599.

My two cents

Though the theme is “Touch the FUTURE”, there wasn’t any BIG breakthrough in products features. The new HP products look good, stylish, beautiful… Easily match your home’s design or your personal character.

What I love about HP is that they keep an affordable price tag while maintaining the product’s quality & performance.

Project Natal

Introducing Project Natal, a revolutionary new way to play: no controller required. See a ball? Kick it, hit it, trap it or catch it. If you know how to move your hands, shake your hips or speak you and your friends can jump into the fun — the only experience needed is life experience.

Now how about that! This is brilliant (and scary) that technology is moving in such pace and if you dont keep up to pace with, you going to loose out tremendously. Personally its exiciting times and it would be very interesting to see how these new developments pan out.

Google

Palm Pre Review Roundup

Syndicating the syndicated: What follows is Boing Boing Gadget’s compilation of Palm Pre reviews from all over the web.

David Pogue, leaked by the Financial Chronicle, at The New York Times:

So do the Pre’s perks (beautiful hardware and software, compact size, keyboard, swappable battery, flash, multitasking, calendar consolidation) outweigh its weak spots (battery life, slow program opening, ringer volume, Sprint network)? Oh, yes indeedy. Especially when you consider that last weak spot might be going away. Verizon Wireless has announced that it will carry the Pre ”in the next six months or so.”

Steven Levy, at Wired:

It’s a huge win … The Pre emphatically shows that Palm has not reached the stage of suffixes. And multitasking rules!

Walt Mossberg, at the Wall Street Journal:

The Pre is a smart, sophisticated product that will have particular appeal for those who want a physical keyboard. It is thoughtfully designed, works well and could give the iPhone and BlackBerry strong competition — but only if it fixes its app store and can attract third-party developers.

Joshua Topolsky, at Engadget:

To put it simply, the Pre is a great phone, and we don’t feel any hesitation saying that. Is it a perfect phone? Hell no. Does its OS need work? Definitely. But are any of the detracting factors here big enough to not recommend it? Absolutely not. There’s no doubt that there’s room for improvement in webOS and its devices, but there’s also an astounding amount of things that Palm nails out of the gate.

Jason Chen, at Gizmodo:

The software is agile, smart and capable. The hardware, on the other hand, is a liability. If Palm can get someone else to design and build their hardware–someone who has hands and can feel what a phone is like when physically used, that phone might just be one of the best phones on the market.

Mark Spoonauer, at Laptop Mag:

We’ve seen many smart phones come and go since the original iPhone, and the $199 Palm Pre is the first device we’ve tested whose user interface not only matches up well to Apple’s offering, but also beats it in some areas. … Palm and Sprint have a hit on their hands with the Pre, and the webOS is a smart phone platform to be reckoned with.

Boy Genius Report:

The OS is great. There’s no ifs ands or buts; it’s really refreshing to see something that’s brand new with a UI unlike anything else out there. The only problem with this is, Palm’s never been a hardware company that anyone’s really cared about. … Couple that with the nation’s underdog carrier at a $299 price-point (before rebate), and we’re not sure how many people are going to be lined up overnight, yet we’re pretty confident once people are able to play a real unit themselves, there will be more than a lot of happy Palm Pre customers.

Bonnie Cha, at CNET:

Despite some missing features and performance issues that make it less than ideal for on-the-go professionals, the Palm Pre offers gadget lovers and consumers well-integrated features and unparalled multitasking capabilities. The hardware could be better, but more importantly, Palm has developed a solid OS that not only rivals the competition but also sets a new standard in the way smartphones handle tasks and manage information.

Ginny Miles, at PC World:

The long-awaited Palm Pre lives up to the hype with a responsive touchscreen and an engaging interface, but a few hardware design flaws keep it from being the perfect smartphone.

Stephen Wildstrom, at at BusinessWeek:

If the Palm Pre had appeared a year ago, it might have turned the smartphone market upside down. It would have beaten out Apple’s iPhone 3G and the iTunes App Store, Google’s Android, the BlackBerry Bold and Storm as well as BlackBerry App World, and possibly taken the spoils. But the field has grown so crowded with clever entries in the past 12 months that the Pre, ingenious as it is, seems evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

Sinead Carew, at Reuters:

The long-awaited Pre has nice new touches, but Palm Inc has a lot of work to do if the device is to be a serious competitor to the iPhone.

Om Malik:

…it is a pretty good-looking device, but it feels a little plasticky and is lower in build quality than a BlackBerry. It is squat, has a nice screen, and is easy to grip. It is round in the right places. However, the slide-out keyboard seems flimsy and cluttered.

Peter Svensson, at the Associated Press:

Move over, iPhone. You’ve had two years on top of the smart phone world. Now there’s a touch-screen phone with better software: the Palm Pre. In a remarkable achievement, Palm Inc., a company that was something of a has-been, has come up with a phone operating system that is more powerful, elegant and user-friendly.

Ed Baig, at USA Today:

The first Palm Pre will certainly give the iPhone and other rivals a run for their money. To be sure, there are areas where it could improve: Bring on the apps. But Palm has delivered a device that will keep it in the game and give it a chance to star in it.

Would you get the Pre? I’m sure long-time Palm fans like myself would enjoy putting a Pre through its paces.

Walt Mossberg Proves iPhone’s Backwardness

Engadget recently speculated that WSJ tech emeritus Walt Mossberg was actually playing around with the long-rumored new iPhone, giving out subtle hints while honoring a supposed press embargo.

Walt Mossberg (Courtesy All Things Digital)

Walt Mossberg (Courtesy All Things Digital)

Yet what really caught my attention was Mr. Mossberg’s assertion that Palm—set to release the Pre in the US two days from now—may have to worry about Apple’s new smartphone:

Unfortunately for Palm, Apple has both a new iPhone operating system and new iPhone hardware coming, likely available within a month, that could obviate many of these advantages.

Apple already has announced it’s adding MMS, universal search, and copy and paste. And, although Apple hasn’t announced any new hardware features, I expect to see an iPhone with up to 32 gigabytes of memory, video recording, a higher-resolution camera, a compass, and greater operating speed. Plus, there are persistent rumors that Apple will announce at least one iPhone at a drastically lower price than $199. [emphasis mine]

Weren’t MMS and copy & paste functionality available on even basic GSM phones way before the “Apple will release a phone!” grapevine existed? And guess what had universal search as early as the mid-90s? Why, Palm PDAs of course!

To be clear, Walt was just reporting on Apple’s publicized future plans. I’m more amused by the realization that it took for Apple this long to integrate what’s been around for years into its phone.

Are “Unauthorized Downloads” Taxable?

Seems some states in the US are planning to apply taxes on digital downloads. According to Techdirt, this kind of tax is scheduled to apply this July 26 in Washington state. More important however is a potential legal ramification. To quote:

What is the value of the digital product for use tax purposes?

The value is the purchase price of the digital product. If the digital product is acquired by means other than a purchase, the value of the digital product is determined by the retail selling price of a similar digital product. [emphasis mine]

So, does this mean the state government can apply a tax to people who acquire a “digital product” (like music, video, or a game for instance) “acquired by means other than a purchase” (like through a pirated torrent)? Authorities definitely need to clarify.

Screenshot of Steam Checkout Page

More importantly, will the tax lead to higher prices, as sellers have to raise prices to honor the law and continue making money? If so, then won’t the tax lessen the incentive for “unauthorized” downloaders to become paying buyers?

More info on ESHB 2075 (AKA the Digital Products Bill) is available here.

VMotion compatible from ESX 3.5 to vSphere 4

I am currently doing some test to simulate the real update requirement for my production VMware Farm to be upgraded from ESX 3.5 to vSphere 4. To minimize the impact to our production system, we may want to do this with as minimal impact as possible. Due to the virtual hardware version and tools upgrade require, is pretty tough for us to perform the entire upgrade at 1 time. Therefore, our plan is get the host upgraded and follow by each individual virtual machine to be upgraded follow the suitable timing for different business unit. HA and DRS will need to be disable temp during the ESX upgrade.

I am able to get the ESX 3.5 to be manage by the latest vcenter. A vmotion from ESX 3.5 to vsphere 4 had been successes too, but the latest version of virtual machine which built from vSphere 4 might not compatible to vmotion back to the ESX 3.5 hosts. At the same time, if you have different processors chipset in the environment and require EVC to be turned on, it may be a little challenge to do so. You may want to ensure the EVC to be done with no down time.  You may need to refer to my previous post about how to enable EVC with no down time.

This trick is workable in the case. The new cluster created in vSphere 4 environment, may temporally disable the HA and DRS due to the incompatibility within ESX 3.5 and vSphere 4 for VMotion, which may happen on the latest virtual hardware version which provided by vSphere 4. Anyway, my test will still going on to further analyze the best upgrade method to be used to our environment due to the challenge of different region, time zone and business function we currently serve with our VMware environment.
