Apple iPhone in Malaysia
Tags: Apple, iphone, Mobile
Apple iPhone is the best thing invented of the year announced by Times Magazine. Why? Five reasons:
- iPhone is pretty
- touchy-feely
- It make other phones better
- It' not a phone, iPhone a platform
- It is but the ghost of [tag]iPhone[/tag] yet to come
I think this is true & no doubt. Right?
Yesterday I went to my friend wedding and few of my friend are using Apple iPhone here. Too bad! I can't afford it. I wish I can get one Apple iPhone with 3G support(let's wait iPhone with 3G support).
Basically we talked about Apple iPhone:
a)Buy an Apple iPhone in Malaysia?
Plaze Lowyat(most famous IT, gadget, mobile stuffs in Malaysia), Plaza Sungai Wang, Online Apple iPhone Shop(XX official Apple authorized dealer), Lowyat Forum & etc
b)How much you can get Apple iPhone in Malaysia?
USD 399? Everyone know that but you can't get in Malaysia. My colleague bought in US around USD420 after tax. Probably you can get Apple iPhone around RM1900 to RM 3000 in Malaysia depend on the packages. Please let us know if you can get more cheaper
c)Using Maxis, Digi or Celcom with Apple iPhone?
Use Apple iPhone with Digi. It's pretty simple, you can unlock using unlocked software but I'm not sure about Maxis & Celcom and I heard it can be done by open the Apple iPhone cover.
d)How to unlock Apple iPhone?
Don't ask me, I don't know.
e)How to use Apple iPhone?
Refer to Apple iPhone documentation or user guide. I don't have Apple iPhone, please don't ask me. hehehehe.

The Apple iPhone without a doubt is an enhanced basic phone and its strong points is making sure it hits the performance mark on all its features.
For example; it’s 2.0 megapixel camera is very sharp but because it’s basic it wasn’t meant to handle low lighting and macro photography.
It’s Mail and Safari does the basic things you need to email and surf the Internet. However, one of the basic thing missing from it is SMS forwarding.
I did a review on the Apple iPhone and the unit is still with me. The provider asked me to keep it for the time being.
Cheers.

When you mentioned “Not very sure about Maxis & Celcom but I heard it can be done by open the Apple iPhone cover.”, what exactly do you mean by that? Do you have to constantly leave the iPhone uncovered without its cover (battery cover/entire housing cover)? Just wondering as I am a Maxis subscriber, and am looking forward to get iPhone for myself in the very2 near future.

IPhone purchase in oversea can be used in Malaysia.
It’s true, but only for those iphone in the early day. The Iphone society called them the Iphone firmware V1.0.2 , V1.1.1 and V1.1.2 The latest Iphone which they called “Out Of Box (OTB) 45-week” mean it was produced after September 2007, using the latest firmware and a 4.6 Bootloader, still cannot be unlock Sim at the moment.
Meaning, those before the date mentioned above IPhone can be unlock and plug in any Sim Card. This is what everyone in Malaysia having.
Those who newly bought the IPhone in US, eventhough come in lower price, can unlock the phone, but not the Sim Card. Meaning the new Iphone can be used as PDA (itunes, games etc), but our Sim Card not working on the new phone, so it CAN’T BE USED AS PHONE.
To unlock the old version, it’s very simple. Just download the software needed, and follow the instruction. I have tried them. It works on the old model IPhone, but not on the latest.

The IPHone with the latest frimware 1.1.2 has been jailbroken, but not the Sim Card. After follow the jailbreak step, the iphone manage to show local telecommunication service, Celcom, Digi and My Maxis. So now everybody to waiting for the “Hack The IPhone Team” to come out with the new software to by pass the bootloader, in order for the IPhone to detect any sim card, other than the AT&T. Fo those who got the IPHone amd would like to try to jailbreak, may refer to:
http://www.winandmac.com/news/activate-and-jailbreak-iphone-112-without-att/
For those who can’t wait for the unlock sim card software, you may try using other hardware method such as TurboSim or StealthSim, USD55 to USD99, but then have to cut the SIm Card to fit into the iphone.
If you have the IPhone before week-45, then you can unlock you IPhone throughly by following the above address.

The Iphone latest firmware has been jailboken, but not the Sim Card.
After jailbreak the Iphone, the setting-Carrier is showing the service of local teleco0mmunication company name such as Celcom, Digi and My Maxis.
This is the instruction that I follow to jailbreak my IPhone:
http://www.winandmac.com/news/activate-and-jailbreak-iphone-112-without-att/
So now everybody is waiting for the “Hack The Iphone Team” to come out with the latest AnySIm version to bypass the bootloader in order for the IPhone to accept any sim card.
For those who can’t wait for the software, you may try using hardware method such as TurboSim or StealthSim, but then have to cut the Sim card in order to fit the Iphon, and normally cost about USD55 - USD99.

I recently purchased an 8GB iPhone from the Mines shopping centre. Cost me RM3,099. For this, i got everything in the box, they opened the box for the first time in front of me and installed the hack in front of me too. Works great. I’m using Maxis and I havn’t had a single problem (except for some reason *100# doesn’t work). While 3,099 seems to be at the higher end of the market price, I prefer quality over a lower price so i guess that’s all good.

No way man, Pretty much everywhere I’ve been looking around, throughout Sg Wang, Low Yat, BB Plaza and Mines… All selling 1.1.1 upgraded to 1.1.2 for 2980-3099. For 2400 your probably getting the 1.1.2 which you cant use local sim card on…
January 13th, 2008 at 12:51 am
Yeah true…All my stocks now is original out of the box (OTB) 1.1.2 and no software modification done. We use the included sim proxy to enable use any network in Malaysia, infact throughout the world network too !! If interested please email me with your contact, stocks are running low, and since Apple has announce that they are releasing the latest 1.1.3 firmware, so the 1.1.2 will become more expensive, as the 1.1.3 we heard that it is possible to jailbreak it, till some Apple Dev find the solution for it. Thanks !

I really enjoyed reading the comments. However though, the entry itself was pure SH*T! I swear to God. You’re pretty much just listing things people can get anywhere else, and the worst part is your english! Please please please learn to speak it first before publishing something on the internet. It’s because of people like you with your broken english that the world looks down on Malaysians.

Just want to share my experience as one of the iPhone owner in Malaysia. Early this year, I’ve bought a brand new shining “unlocked” iPhone ver. 1.1.2 with TurboSIM. This iPhone are specifically meant for of my wedding “hantaran” ( btw, what is the english word for “hantaran”?:) ) for my wife-to-be girlfriend. It has been an interesting yet educational experience for me as an iPhone user. To make it short, one day my iPhone crashed unexpectedly, it kept rebooting the springboard continuously and it made me always wanted to cry (seriously). Like any other tech-geek would do when facing this situation, I’ve scoured the net for solution. I’ve managed to restore the iPhone to version 1.1.1 and unlocked it to be able to install 3rd party apps. But then, I was stucked there. I can’t get my SIM to work. Then I’ve tried to upgrade it to 1.1.2 and successfully unlocked it, but still my SIM not working. AnySIM? Been there.. Downgrade the baseband? Done that. Anything I tried to make my SIM work, failed. Main script execution failed. This time, I really did cried. Almostlah.. But then, I saw this package from Installer: “1.1.2/1.1.3 OTB Unlock”. I was a bit suspicious at first but then I said to myself “What the heck, just try it” and I did. For more steps go here -> http://iphone.unlock.no/OTB112unlock.htm
After following these steps, I finally got an iPhone ver 1.1.3 unlocked with a fully working SIMcard without using the TurboSIM! After going down through all of this, it came to me that it is actually easy to unlock an iPhone by yourself! No TurboSIM involve! If only i knew about this earlier, I would have just bought the original OTB 1.1.3 iPhone at RM1250 instead of paying RM2550 for an unlocked iPhone with a now-useless TurboSIM. So, guys, get an OTB 1.1.3 iPhoneNOW and unlock it by yourself and save $$$!! Trust me! You’ll notice how DAMN easy it is..

FOR ALL PEOPLE LOOKING FOR IPHONE BE AWARE!!!!. I own the first gen iPhone purchase in USA, the the 3G one bought in France. After evaluating all seller in Malaysia, I can confirm the following. Most of them sell jailbroken phone with Turbo Sim card. It means that 3G cannot be operated!!!!!!!any software update will have to wait until the hacking community manage to do it. So if you are looking to buy a proper phone, you must look TO the country who has a telco legislation banning any phone manufacturer to bundle it with a telco company. There is only few countries around the world who has this regulation. France, Italia, New Zealand….. So when you buy from these countries, you buy a brand new one from Apple store and the IMEI is officially registered in Apple Database. So you can enjoy a true iPhone 3G!!!!! Bear in mind that iPhone 3G not subsidize by the telco cost Euro 709 for 16GB in France, 689 Euro in Italia……Any help you request to avoid being cheated, please comment! Dave An Expat in Malaysia!
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Considering dave’s english, I sincerely doubt that he is in fact an expat.
Anyhow, you can buy the iPhone 3G unlocked in Australia for $729 plus a $80 unlocking fee. This amounts to approximately RM2400. Australia seems to be the cheapest place to get a legally unlocked iPhone 3G (if only because the taxes are far less than Europe), and so far it has been impossible to unlock the 3G, so I’d say that Australia is the way to go. Essentially, if you are to buy the iPhone 3G in Malaysia, be careful for god’s sake. Check your sim card in the phone before you buy it, and if you buy of the internet, try to arrange a COD situation so you are able to ensure you are not getting scammed. The short of it is that nobody in their right mind would sell the iPhone 3G unlocked for less than about RM2500 so you should treat any of these bogus deals with great suspicion.
Don’t hesitate to ask me if you need any assistance in purchasing your iPhone 3G, just leave a comment right here.
Sincerely,
Jono
A REAL expat in Malaysia.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:29 pm
To BODO the man…WHY DO YOU NEED TO PAY UNLOCKING FEE if it is legally unlocked!!!!!!
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Excellent question, and may I remark on your incredibly intellectual ability to change my name to something similar to “idiot” in Malay.
Anyhow, basically the $729 is for a prepaid phone. The way it works in Australia is that they want you to spend a certain amount on their network before you can use it on anyone elses. It’s Australia so yeah, anything to make a dollar or two. Either way, that method of getting it unlocked is much cheaper than 700 odd Euros that you’d pay anywhere in Europe. The other option of course is to wait for the good old Malaysian beaurocrats to figure out where the guy is who’s meant to approve new contracts for Maxis so that Maxis can finally bring the phone here proper.
Regards,
Your ‘bodoh’ friend.
September 23rd, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Yes, Jono, Australia is one of the few places you may be able to get it. I think Optus officially announce they will sell an unlocked version. The term and condition, I am not too sure about it. the question remains if the unlocking process unable you to register your iPhone through iTunes?
Regarding your comments about Malaysia, I guess it won’t come so soon. Several reasons make me believe otherwise. The first is the legislation. Malaysia has a regulation which do not entitle a phone manufacturer to bundle it with a carrier. The second issue is the subsidize fee. Knowing that AT & T subsidize it for about 400USD, I guess Maxis or any other carrier will have to sell lots of handset to cover up for the loss. the third reason is a legal aspect. In order to get the iPhone, you must have at least an Apple Store in the country. Imagine the class action against Apple for selling an equipment which cannot be use with the service they provide (downloading music/movies online! The reason given about the apple store in Malaysia is simply due to Piracy issue! To conclude, Iphone is nice but due to the infrastructure in Malaysia, forget about 3G speed! An arrogant frenchy! see you!

I’ve just bought my 3G phone from Low Yat plaza 8 Gb for RM2900 inclusive of 40 free applications .. silicon cover and screen protector.. I guess pretty good deal.. i’m not using turbo sims or software unlocked but the t echnician is putting another thin layer of film on top of my sim card. Well , I guess to unlocked the OS or something… I’m using iTunes account to update the application and down load new software / songs from itunes..no problem… 3 G was not a problem at all..FYI i’m using CELCOM unlimited data subscribtion…you tube and face book are pretty fast as well… I’m not sure of MAXIS.. U just need to reset the network setting and everything will be OK… I’m not complaining at all.. During window shopping .. the price varies from one shop to another… even the solution to unlocked is diff… Beware of hidden cost … silicon cover la.. software la..etc ..There is even a guy quoting up to RM3400 - RM 3800. I bought the iphone 3g 16gb from ebay USA, supposedly can be unlocked using turbo sim. The turbo sim provided by the seller has IC too thick that i couldnt slot in with the celcom sim card. Now I cant use the phone.
I checked the turbo sims being sold at low yat, but the prices were really potong leher ones…averaging RM200 per piece.
Anybody can suggest to me the place I can buy cheaper turbo sim in Klang Valley?

Hi
I have iPhone 3G 16GB and 8GB. Its official Singtel unlocked unit.
No need to use and turbo sim or whatsoever.
Disadvantage of turbosim is the possibility that your sim tray got stuck and cant take it out.
You will spoil your iPhone because of that.
Singtel unit is under warranty 1 year from them and original official receipt from them will be included. Its better to get the nearby country unit as nearer to claim warranty rather than sending it back to USA.
Email me at : deeptrouble88@gmail.com for best price.
Thanks.
