If you have a high-resolution screens (for example. 19" LCD with 1680×1050 screen resolution), some users may consider the default fonts too be or too large. You can fix this by following these steps:
- Open System -> Preferences -> Appearance
- Select the "Fonts" tab
- Click the "Details" button (lower right)
- Adjust the Resolution down to 96dpi
- Make sure you have Subpixel (LCDs) Smoothing enabled
- Save the preferences

Personally I used this setting even through I have only 17" LCD monitor with 1280 x 1024 screen resolution in my Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon).
