I would like to share how to install Fedora 8 Werewolf in my VMware Server. (VMware Server is free edition of the Vmware ESX server) Don’t ask me why not install on VMware Workstation. Again this guide just for any Linux newbie especially Fedora Linux.
Let’s start:

Press ENTER to continue else it will continue as default.

Click Skip to continue because this is waste time and make sure you have the correct SHA1SUM by enter: sha1sum Fedora-8-i386-DVD.iso in any LOinux machine if you have. Else you may click OK to do a media check. You can click Next to continue if you see the first Fedora GUI screen or click Release Notes. Normally I won’t read on Release Notes here, you can go to Fedora web site and read it early.

Choose your language and click Next (I choose English and click Next)

Choose your keyboard layout

This WARNING is require new hard disk to be initialized. Click Yes to continue if this is a new hard disk. Eventually you created in VMware Server or Workstation, this should be new partition.

Click Next to continue if you have DHCP network else click on Edit for configure static IP either IPv4 or IPv6 and click OK.

Choose your nearest location/timezone/city and click Next to continue.

Enter your root(super user) password. Write it down in case you can’t remember and click Next.

Select your desire package or software and click Next.

Click Next for Fedora 8 installation. Probably it will takes about 10 - 15 minutes depend on computer speed. Take a rest here.

Please do not do anything while installation in progress.

Basically the Fedora 8 installation is done, click Reboot to continue.

Please wait, Fedora 8 is booting up.

Before you get into Fedora desktop, you must configure a general setup. Accept the License and continue

Choose Disable Firewall for now and click forward if you’re not sure.

[...] Nixforce.com a site dedicated to opensource products, like Linux, Debian, php, mysql and more wrote an interesting post today onHere’s a quick excerptAgain this guide just for any Linux newbie especially Fedora Linux. [...]
The most important instruction (to a newbie) has mysterious typo’s in it which render it impossible to make any sense out of.
Can somewhere please translate the paste below into something understandable. I can’t determine from it whether typing yes will destroy my laptop or not. It’s really an important point to explain to a newbie. On the face of it, it looks like VMWARE is letting Fedora ask permission to clobber G-d only knows what the heck it is that’s on the a physical partition. Is it possible Fedora 7 under VMWARE could ruin the other guest operating systems if I say yes? Help!
“This WARNING is require new hard disk to be initialized. Click Yes to continue if this is a new hard disk. Eventually you created in VMware Server or Workstation, this should be new partition. “
AreDeeGee, I assume you know VMware workstation or VM server. When you create a new virtual machine, you must create a new partition right? So just click YES to continue because it won’t destroy any partition or data.
>>When you create a new virtual machine, you must create a new partition right?
Ummm, well, yes and no. The subtleties and nuances of language to which I am accustomed do not seem to be in effect in this blog.
I do understand that the rather frightening message which occasioned my original comment was in actual (virtual?) fact benign.
However, I do hope you will never-the-less concede that the literal quote which I found confusing was in fact confusing, ambiguous, nonsensical, ungrammatical, and unintelligible. To whit:
“This WARNING is require new hard disk to be initialized. Click Yes to continue if this is a new hard disk. Eventually you created in VMware Server or Workstation, this should be new partition. “
AreDeeGee,
Planet Malaysia’s native language is obviously not English. Yet, he/she has done a complete job of creating a set of instructions in English “most” people should be able to follow.
It would be far more constructive of you to provide a better explanation for dealing with the Warning messages rather than complain.
Have a nice day!
Toms, thanks for your comment and explanation.
Hi,
I can’t seem to find a better guide than this online!
But I have a problem and hoping if someone might know the answer I can’t seem to find anywhere - I am also *completely* new to vmware and fedora.
“As usual VMware Server will reboot until you can see 1st installation screen.”
I have reached that screen that asks “What type of media contains the packages to be installed.”
I have the downloaded iso and packages in a folder, but I am unsure of how to let it detect it. Local CD gives nothing, Hard drive gives sources for driver disk which I have no idea about (I thought it should be here), and I am unsure about the NFS directory, FTP and HTTP.
I would be so grateful for any response.
Thanks…
I got to right after the page where you select the time zone, when selecting which packages and software stuff I ticked all three boxes as well as the bottom when, then when I clicked next the whole screen went black.
I tried restarting it, turning it on and off but it’s still black. I looked in the boot menu but I don’t think any of that affects whatever i just messed up.
Can anyone help? Is there a way to remove a virtual machine and redo it?
I put about 40 gigs into the disk and so far it’s all been wasted
I followed the instructions above, but Fedora 8 won’t boot. I’m using VMWare Workstation 5.5.5. I get all the way to the “Congratulations” screen and then when I reboot, I just get a black screen with a horizontal cursor in the top left corner. It stays like that and doesn’t change even after hours.
What’d I do wrong?
Any plans to add information on installing VMWare tools?
