How to install Oracle VM in VMware Workstation

[tag]Oracle VM[/tag] was official released on Nov 12 2007 last month. Oracle VM is server virtualization software that fully supports both Oracle and non-Oracle applications, and is three times more efficient than other server virtualization products. Backed by Oracle's world-class support organization, customers now have a single point of enterprise-class support for their entire virtualization environments, including the Linux operating system, [tag]Oracle[/tag] Database, Fusion Middleware, and Application software. Oracle unveiled its Oracle VM hyper visor based on Xen open source hypervisor.

The following tutorial will teach you "How to install Oracle VM in VMware Workstation

Getting the Oracle VM

To get the Oracle VM files do to the following:

  • Go to http://edelivery.oracle.com/oraclevm and click continue download; you will be taken to the Oracle distributes sites.
  • Fill in the registration, search for Oracle VM or follow the prompts on the screen for download.
  • Unzip the Oracle VM zip file (you will see the Oracle VM ISO file later)

Getting the VMware Workstation 6 ready

You can get VMware Workstation 6 from VMware either purchase or evaluate version.  

  • Create a new VMware Machine.
  • Click 'Next'
  • Click 'Custom'
  • Choose VMware Workstation '5' from the drop down menu and click 'ESX server compatible' check box.

   

  • Click 'Next'
  • Click 'Linux' check box
  • Choose 'Other Linux 2.6.x kernel 64-bit'
  • Click 'Next'
  • Enter 'Virtual Machine Name'
  • Enter virtual machine 'Location'
  • Choose 'One' or 'Two' processor
  • Click 'Next'
  • Enter '1024' memory for this virtual machine. (Recommended minimum 512 MB)
  • Click 'Use Bridged Networking'
  • Click 'Next'
  • Click 'Create a new virtual disk'
  • Click 'SCSI'
  • Click 'Next'
  • Keep the disk space minimum '20G'
  • Click 'Next'
  • Specify disk file (VMDK file)
  • Edit the virtual machine setting and point it to your Oracle VM ISO file location.

   

  • Right click new created Oracle VM virtual machine and click 'Close'
  • Add 3 NIC for XenMotio, HA and etc.
  • Edit Oracle VM.vmx file and add additional NICs 
  • ethernet0.present = "TRUE" ethernet0.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE" ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000" ethernet0.connectionType = "bridged" ethernet0.addressType = "generated" ethernet1.present = "TRUE" ethernet1.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE" ethernet1.virtualDev = "e1000" ethernet1.connectionType = "bridged" ethernet1.addressType = "generated" ethernet2.present = "TRUE" ethernet2.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE" ethernet2.virtualDev = "e1000" ethernet2.connectionType = "bridged" ethernet2.addressType = "generated" monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = "TRUE" monitor_control.vt32 = "TRUE"
  • Click 'Save'
  • Click 'File', click 'open' and choose your Oracle VM virtual machine file
  • Click 'Start this virtual machine'

Install Oracle VM

  • Click 'Enter' to Install or upgrade Oracle VM

  • Click 'Skip' the media check. Usually I won't do media check
Media Check

  • Choose 'English' as a deault language.
Language

  • Choose 'US' for keyboard selection
Keyboard

  • Click 'Yes' to  erase all DATA.

  • Choose 'Remove all partitions on selected drives and create default layout and select 'sda'
  • Click 'OK' to remove all partition

  • Click 'Yes' to remove all partitions or data

  • Click 'Yes' for the Oracle VM partitioning and mount point.  Probably you may edit for custom setup.

  • Set the boot loader as '/dev/sda' Master Boot Record
MBR

  • Choose the Network Card adapter eth0 as the Oracle VM management interface
NIC
  • Enter the Network Configuration for eth0 and click 'OK'

  • Enter 'gateway', ' primary & secondary DNS' and click 'OK'

  • Enter the Oracle VM 'hostname'
hostname

  • Select your 'Time Zone'
timezone

  • Type the password for 'Oracle VM Agent' which will be use by Oracle VM Manager

  • Enter a secure 'root' password
Root Password

  • Click 'OK' to continue

  • Oracle VM package installation begin

  • Oracle VM package installation on progress

  • Click 'Reboot' to continue

  • Click 'Agree' for the Oracle VM End User License Agreement. 

Congratulation! Basically you have done the Oracle VM installation with VMware Workstation 6. Please check Oracle VM official web site for more informations.

    I’m trying to install Oracle VM 2.1.5 on VMware workstation 6.5.3. The installion gets stuck after the

    “# ‘Remove all partitions on selected drives and create default layout and select ’sda’
    # Click ‘OK’ to remove all partition” stage.

    Any suggestions..

    well, i’ve done the same thing but with virtualbox and it works, but i am unable to install oracle vm manager inside the newly created machine, any ideas??

    So, i was able to able to install the VM but on booting the system, I get the following error:

    ERR: Not a 64-Bit CPU!erver-ovs (xen-64-3 .1.3 2.6.18-8.1.15.0.16.el5ovs)’

    Help please..

    i am stuck in a step
    “Remove all partitions on selected drives and create default layout and…”. No sda device can be found. Any idea?
