Apple MAC in Malaysia
Tags: Apple, iMac, iphone, Malaysia
I believed they are many many Apple MAC users or I called it as supporters in oversea(especially US) but not here - Malaysia.
Previously I meet with one of the x-Apple Malaysia Sales Manager and she told me the same thing.
She said Malaysian always have the same mind set, whoever own an Apple Mac must be rich. Frankly I’m not sure what is the reason. It’s true? Why?
According to Mac Asia web site, Mac Mini minimum cost about RM2399.00, iMacs G5 Intel minimum cost about RM 3999.00, Power Mac G5 minimum cost about RM 8499.00.
Note: USD 1 = RM 3.70
Personally I don’t think this price are high, if you get a normal PC also cost around RM2000 to RM4400.00. Unfortunely I don’t have any Apple Mac yet which I hope to get one soon.

if you not only looking at the price but on the OS quality, ergonomic design, hardware stability itself, Mac is actually cheaper than PCs.
i owned a mac since Dec 2004 and now its still rocks, i dun need to spend another few k to upgrade in order to run a new OS.
its virus and worms free, UNIX stability, Mac user friendly and most of all, its rocks!

I like FreeBSD more. And another favorite is Debian GNU/Linux. I thought it’s hard to learn, and never give it a real try before. But now I found that it is damn damn damn more easy and simple than Red Hat.
The art of Linux — is definitely Debian. :-p

Please don’t tag me as a stereotype-geek but I’m totally agree with FreeBSDuser that Debian is much friendly to me especially Ubuntu that I’m using currently. But should I pay attention to SElinux available in Red Hat as it should provides better network and user protection? I ain’t going anywhere without dpkg and apt-get.
Will be getting my hands on FreeBSD parallel with my studies of server services on Debian. Do I still have spare time after 8.5 hours of daytime routine work?

RM3999 for the iMac G5 intel is cheap, it is using Intel core 2 duo chips. If you compare iMac with the higher end mac mini (RM3199), the CPU speed is same, but is core duo (and not core 2 duo), RM800 different, but mac mini without display, keyboard and mouse.
So, get a Mac.

Firstly, Malaysians are not used to Macs. They only see Macs in a relatively expensive environment/shops/boutiques; they see creative professionals tote macbooks looking ever so important and absorbed (not related to sales, just an observation) ; they see “comparable” specs in computers and they put the price tags on these “comparable” machines and decide that it’s better for them to own a PC instead of Macs because they believe it’s cheaper. And this same group of people buy pirated software thus creating a ton of value for little money. What needs to be done by Apple Malaysia (only a regional sales office) is an aggresive after-sales support, more incentives to purchase a Mac and wide ranging brand awareness drive; sell them the idea of a more secure computing environment, a friendlier user-interface and last but not least, the overall elegance of OSX and its hardware.
A major problem for Malaysia is pirated software. I used to have pirated software in my computer. Now I run Linux (a man needs to have his Karma on the positive tilt) but Linux has yet to offer the grace, elegance and ease of use that is often associated with Macs.
Macs should be used more in business fronts to be accepted at home. I haven’t heard of Macs making waves in goverment offices or banks. And I wonder why, because those places need a better system than what the PC is offering. I have been virus free since I migrated to Linux 2 months ago. But, bear in mind that Linux is not yet ready for primetime. A few more years and a better user interface and understanding of its users, it’ll get there.
If the right strategy is in place, Malaysia isn’t a difficult environment to sell Macs, it should thrive even. But people need to be educated and Macs should be in their face since preschool. Teach ‘em young. The same way Microsoft got us to use their products in the first place.

I’ve always wanted Macs eversince the iMac G3 came out but I was in Standard 6 at that time so it was out of the question lah.. Anyway, I’ve succesfully converted some of my friends. 2 of them are using MacBooks, 2 more are saving money to get a Mac and 1 lucky guy is using a MacBook Pro.

I got a Intel Imac, and got imac G3 400mhz and 600mhz as collection. I’m a student, save pocket money and part time job’s salary for my macs. who say i’m rich? haha
September 17th, 2007 at 3:52 pm
i think i know why the malaysian don’t buy iMac … because iMac come with the powerful OS, MacOSX but they don’t know how to use it. And one more, because the price … i think, the imac and mac mini is too expensive
It also hard to upgrade.
September 19th, 2007 at 7:14 pm
lol, be more realistic, there is a lot of reasons why malaysian don’t buy mac.
first of all, you don’t get all the exotic games for mac, even if they have it on mac, it is going to be very hard to source them from the pirated stores. yes, you can now run windows on mac (problem settled) but there’s another problem, let’s say you buy a mac (desktop), you won’t get the freedom of upgrading in the future (no matter how good your current desktop is, one day it will be outdated) another thing is, you don’t get certain softwares for mac.
i’m an engineering student in australia from malaysia and i have to use AutoCAD, ProE and CAD softwares for my studies and these softwares run on windows.i have a friend who owns a mac notebook but he stills have a pc at home just in case he needs to run windows softwares.
it is not all bad for mac though, it is true mac and unix system is inherently more stable and bug free compared to windows and i have to admit that apple certainly have cool design and mac do have easy to use and cool interface.
but for me, PC is still the choice as an overall choice while for others, it is depends on what your priorities are.
September 22nd, 2007 at 5:13 am
Agree, If you’re gamer, stick with PC, but doesn’t mean you can’t try Mac. Mac is not easy to upgrade, I agree with that but what exactly your reason to upgrade your Mac? Mac is not like PC, getting slower and slower as time goes by. I still have iMac G4 with 1GHz processor, upgraded the OS to Tiger and works like a charm. No hardware upgrade whatsoever. The only thing you may want to upgrade in the future are probably RAM and Harddisk (which I pretty much doubt, since portable HD is belambak on the market), but the RAM is easily accessible on all new Mac, with the exception of Mac Mini.
You can use Tiger on a 500MHz G3 for god sake and still runs pretty good, compare to Pentium 3 runs XP. I don’t know why the hardware upgrade is the issue here. Mac don’t need constant upgrades to run their softwares, not like PC.
But don’t get me wrong, I play games sometimes, I have few (no need to enclose) Macs currently and 1 PC, ported my PC applications to Mac and runs using Parallels and CrossOver, and play my fps hungry games on a PC. I can dual boot my Mac to play games though, but for old time sake, I keep my PC (which has a major upgrades already) for gaming purpose.
So, to conclude all, if you’re a heavy internet user, wants easy to use, stability system, hassle free, better supports, go with Mac. If you’re gamer, need to run specific applications that available only for Windows, like to defrag computer in a spare time, big fan of symantec, pc-cillin, mc-afe, etc.. go with windows. If you’re an expert in computer-coding, like to see black screen with white fixedsys letters, have a lot of online friends that also computer geeks, go with linux.
September 23rd, 2007 at 6:35 pm
i do agree Mac’s OS is more stable because they have more efficient codes and apple really tested the OS before releasing, i can still remember my computing lecturer making fun of windows by saying Windows XPerimenting but for windows, it depends on the user i guess, if ure really good in computers, you certainly wont have any problems in the long run, my 21months old laptop(bought it for RM4,888, with upgraded RAM) runs vista business perfectly well and have a system rating of 4(Windows Experience Index). i ran XP smoothly for 18months previously without any problem.

October 3rd, 2007 at 1:02 pm
i dont really like macs but not necessarily hate it either. i use mac at work (im a video editor) and the whole tv/video/film industry ppl use macs as part of their daily routine.from directors to producers to production assistants and the makcik cleaner..everyone cn be spotted carrying a mac.(except for makcik, just kidding) and i can help wonder why. theres nothing a mac can do tat the pc cant. one funny thing is to transfer small version video file, everyone prefers mpg, while final cut or quicktime does not offers mpg conversion ability. thus, u hv to find(usualy buy) small software from internet to convert it. theres also too many problems with video/file conversion from mac and pc that i encountered. the dvd studio pro tat come together with final cut studio is a major bummer..it makes u feel like using a software targeted for childrens. its totally amature and illogical.editing on final cut is damn slow especialy if ur working on HD (even im using a dual-core G5). its a pain to drag the timeline panes and wait for the preview to load.
tats just some of the crappiness of macs.. screw u guys mac loyalist.. im using pcs for life
October 17th, 2007 at 4:11 am
LOL. Editing HD (is it the FULL HD?) on a Dual Core G5? You must be joking. You should get the 8 Core MacPro (2×3ghz Quad core Xeon). And soup it up to 16gb of RAM and I believe it could fly with HD.
To ’screw u guys mac loyalist’ just because you have the bad experience of editing HD on an old (it’s G5, but we’re in the era of Xeon and Core2Duos) and not top of the line mac (BTW, you using the latest FCP?) is quite unfair and uncalled for. I think that you should RELOOK at your existing hardware & software setup before complaining and blaming the whole brand down. And I do all my MPG conversions using Compressor (comes with FCP) or the free MPG Streamclip. No prob.

Speaking about mac vs windows…I ‘ve been using on both machines particularly in video editing..not so much differences in terms of performance. everything solely depends on ram and cpu power and how the softwares were written…since mac now also uses intel proc..honestly not much difference…some cases i do prefer to use pc based software to encode the video such as canopus procoder that produces better quality than encoders written specifically for mac.. For video editing suite..if you familiar with all those editing softwares…you will realise that the interface is not so much diffence between one and another for example Premiere pro and Final cut pro everything you can on FCP also can be done on Premiere…and also about the stability I’ve been using winxp quite sometimes in editing (premiere pro).. and my xp never crashed during editing…I’m not talking about 1 or 2 gigs file size…I’m talking about hundred of gigs video file size…. Yap some editing softwares for windows are prone to crash due to poorly written..depend on what materials you going to edit..if HD …both machines with 1 or 2 gig ram are pretty damn slow..believe me….:)unless both machines been installed with quad cores or more than 2 gigs of ram…then you can edit your video smoothly…
BTW i love macosx compare to vista..and going to upgrade to leopard soon…cheers

Yes, those days back in ‘90 are for orang kaya. Apple is cheap now like PC. Apple market share will never go up unless big corporates, banks, military, insurance etc start using them.

Hello, where can i get a cool macbook in Kelantan?
January 20th, 2008 at 2:06 am
absolutely love mac! my first own mac is my ibook g4 i was in form 4. and now ive got a ipod classic. and im trying to get my dad to give me his iphone..hhaha
malaysians are not into mac because the system is different compared to windows. my friends and family get so confused over this computer. they just have to get used to mac. a lot see it as more to adobe photoshop and creative stuff and final cut pro, movie editing. people see mac as the type of computers. its fancy and a bit too modern i guess. but for some people mac is life. literally, i hate using window im so glad to be a mac owner. well like my dad says, there are more supporters over there in the us because their population is more than the population in malaysia. well, obviously. most malaysians arent ready to take modern technology to the next level. well, i think… u know i went to an international school in malaysia yet they still use lame windows computer very cimplak..hahha but the odd thing is my primary school in australia is even more modern then my international high school in malaysia. we were using macs in the computer room. for primary kids. thats really something.
anyways do they sell cheaper macs?? i really wish i knew where. a friend of mine bought the new imac for around 2k. yah thats extremely cheap but i have no idea where, and i lost contact to.
i just cant wait till macbook air will be released in malaysia! wuhoo

The only reason that I see, is pirated software. It’s hard for you to find pirated software for Mac. By going to torrent websites, they offer download of the whole software PLUS the crack file for PCs. Another is the stigma I guess. People thought Mac users are posers. In which, you can get the same thing with PC, only cheaper, and less stylish. You know Asian, they don’t like to stand out like a sore thumb. Lastly is pricing. IF you compare the machines with the same specs, you can get a PC, discounted at 3-4k compared to Mac. But maybe Mac wanted to target a niche market and not the masses. I happened to have a Macbook Pro. And the comments I get from friends whenever I took out that thing is overwhelming and also emberassing at the same time. It’s like you own lots of money to waste it on a Mac.
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:23 am
tat was the first thing i’v experienced when i got my first mac.. its an eMac..way back 2-3 years ago and i got a friend came to my house to do assigment.. i didnt want him to go up my room coz somehow i feel embarassed to show him the Mac (we studied graphic design so owning a Mac is the ultimate thing).. he doesnt have one so i was reluctant to show him afraid that he will label me as show-off and money from the bank of momanddad’s… bt i showed him after that anyway and he was quite impress and probably a little jealous…bt i gv him time to use it and we did the assigment on it.. it was cool…even do its not much different frm using photoshop/illustrator on pc bt it gv us the kinda feeling tat only pro designers hv when using Mac.. hahaha..anyway i didnt use the eMac anymore now coz it couldnt cope with today’s software…going to get a macbook hopefuly…and using my own money!..

Guys,
Im thinking of buying the MAcPro 15″. Since it is hard to get pirated software such as Iworks etc. How do you guys use the Mac for your daily work?…Does the Mac comes with Office software or something since the license for mac softwares are expensive.
February 4th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
There are various programs to compensate original programs if u look hard enough. Iwork is rated at RM339 the last time i check.
The Most notable ones is Iwork/Microsoft office.
I am currently using NeoOffice for my documents (words, spreadsheet, etc) and thunderbird for my mails and camino for my net (safari and mail should more than suffice though)

Hello,
I bought a HP/Compaq notebook (Vista) couple of months back for my gf and I just got myself a 13.3″ macbook and it’s absolutely cool.
Firstly, the packaging is a winner, easy to setup and all hardware looks absolutely cool. Even the charger adaptor looks better.
Now come to the OS, well i’ve been a pc user for the past 14years and I still am, in the office and home. But, nothing compares to the Mac OSX. It boots and shutdown way faster than a pc (even an XP). Whatever software you need, it’s already packaged in except for word processing and spreadsheets, should you need one, the iworks costs RM339 while MS Office 2008 @ RM609 (Home & Students Ed.)
Summarise, youl will definitely enjoy the whole experience rather than spending too much time on trouble shooting.
Yes, it’s a little bit pricey but if you look closely, the pricing is about the same as mac’s pricing is slowly getting more accessible.
Look at iMac, no pc design comes closer to that. Cheers.

Reading through the replies for this issue, I must say that I’m fairly impressed with the level of satisfaction that most guys have with their Macs. The only problem that I see is converting a PC loyalist to Apple’s products…
Anyway, I’m typing this reply on a Macbook Black, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, souped-up to 4GB RAM, so you guys know which side of the fence I sit on… However, it’s not always been that way.
I’m a Doc by profession, and almost all of my experience with modern computing (that’s exluding the days of Apple and BASIC) has been with PCs. Microsoft dominates the market so much that most less tech-savvy individuals would equate computers to PCs. As far as presentations in the medical profession go, I am yet to see one created and presented in any other format except Powerpoint.
My first exposure to Macs came about 3 years ago when I bought the iBook G4. Wasn’t really a good experience, but that’s because it was my fault, mainly. I fell for the sales hype, and ended up installing the cheapo version of Office , can’t remember the name now, and it was so,so clunky. there’d be a lag with every word that I typed and it was very frustrating. Also, I wasn’t familiar with the OS and didn’t bother to educate myself on it, and within a year, I went back to a Windows based laptop.
Then came the Intel based Macs, and reports of being able to run BOTH OS’es simultaneously REALLY intrigued me… so, last week I finally got over the hesitation and got this new Macbook, thinking I’d install the Vista on it so that I’d have the best of both worlds. I also bought one of those Idiot’s Guide books on Leopard OS.
Well, guess what?? I’m more familiar with the Leopard and Macs now, so much so I don’t think I’ll need to install Vista after all!! I’ve installed Office for Macs and it’s running great!! I’m totally in love with my new Mac, and am already thinking of getting an iMac to sit at home. It’s true what they say… Macs are not just pieces of hardware, they’re a way of life…
Anyway, if any of you are looking for a 3 year old iBook G4, please feel free to give me a call. It’s 019-6623 596. I’m sure we can work something out…
Later!
