OpenSUSE 10.2 x86-64

We got a new toy - OpenSUSE 10.2 x86-64 bit recently. OpenSUSE was released last month. OpenSUSE 10.2 can be downloaded as a DVD or as a set of 5 CDs for x86, x86-64 and PPC architectures. There are also two additional CDs that you can download, one that contains language packs and the other one for non-open-source software.

- Desktop Model: Dell Precision 490
- Memory: 4Gb RAM
- Processor: Intel Xeon 3.0GHz
- Hard Disk Drive: 3 (1 x 80GB, 2 x 250 GB)
- Display Card: NVidia NV44 / Quadro NVS285
- Monitor: Dell 2007FP 21″ LCD
- Network Interface Card: 2 x Nextreme BCM5721 & BCM5752 Ethernet)
- I didn’t have any problems downloading(I use DVD), burning, and installing.
- OpenSUSE’s installer is quite impressive, everything go smoothly and all hardware’s are auto detected.
- OpenSUSE 10.2 x86_64 come withKernel 2.6.18.2-34-default, Gnome, OpenOffice 2.0.4, Firefox 2.0.3, GIMP 2.2.13 and many more, just choose what you want to install.
- Personally I prefer Gnome desktop, I like Gnome Menu.
- It’s not working by default, add additional YAST package repositories and download the Nvidia drivers to make it work.
- installed rDesktop and Terminal Server Client (tsclient)
- tested(remote access) working fine on few Windows XP & Windows 2003 Server
- Running Bridge Networking(eth0 & eth1).
- eth0 connected to physical network port & eth1 connected to my laptop due to limited network port near to my cubicle.
- make sure your firewall configure correctly.
- Definitely FAST even running 3D effects.
- I’m happy with it! This is my first time running OpenSUSE and x86_64 bit Linux box
