Your Password is Disclose

I was try one of the microblogging software with my friend for the past few days and we are noticed one of the features that automatically send notices to Twitter stored a plain text password in MySQL database. That’s mean if you’re using the similar web services, your Twitter password is actually disclose.

Remember if you’re using Meebo, Facebook, Friendster, Myspace or any other community site that require enter your email address and password, I think your password is
disclose. Said for an example Meebo, you can have single account register on Meebo that keep multiple IM account. I’m sure you already save your password in the database(no matter plain text or not, your password is disclosed). If you enter Gmail, Yahoo or MSN email address and password in Facebook looking for your friends in the contact list who use the same services, I think your password is disclose too. Perhap they claimed they won’t keep your password.

How about those ‘policy’ that protected privacy? What are they try to do with your email data. Sorry I don’t know.

Encoded your email address

Publishing an email address on the web is not recommended.

Normally, we can see a similar email format “email @ domain dot com”, “email at domain dot com”  or using image for represent their email address published on forum, blog website. I found an interesting way to do it from Google China Blog.

In fact, this is not a new technology but I think it will be useful. Use encoded email address, it will transforming your ascii email address into its equivalent decimal entity

This encoded e-mail address can be read and translated back into its original ascii text by almost any web browser without any further action on your part. Just replace all instances of your e-mail address on your pages with the code, and you won’t have to worry (too much) about spam lists.

Why Not Use BCC in Email Chain?

Personally I have received a lot of emails from my family's, friends, and colleagues daily. I believed some of the emails are so called 'emails chain' or 'junk mail' which are forward form one person to another person such as a photos(Edison Chen(陈冠希), Bobo Chan(陈文媛), Gillian Chung(钟欣桐) and Cecilia Cheung(张柏芝) photos?), jokes, malling list and etc. 

 

Look! This is one of the example mail that I received from my friend that keep forward. I just wonder why not forward using "BCC"?

According to Wikipedia – Blind carbon copy, abbreviated BCC, and sometimes referred to as Blind Courtesy Copy refers to the practice of sending a message to multiple recipients in such a way that what they receive does not contain the complete list of recipients.

It was also used, though rarely and with more difficulty in preparation, in typewritten correspondence by ensuring BCC and the names did not appear on the top copy (the original); the most discreet (though troublesome) method was to roll the copies through the typewriter again without the top copy, and type the BCC information onto the otherwise-completed copies. An alternate way is to switch the ribbon setting to strike the paper without raising the ribbon over the area being struck; this, however, leaves impressions in the surface of the paper. Read more

No Email Content In My Thunderbird

I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird running on my Ubuntu Linux for more than 2 year and its consolidated most of my important email included POP3 and IMAP. Today, when I was open one of my primary gmail account, I found the only subject, sender(basically top part) and without the email content. WTH? Please don't do this to me. I have no backup long time ago……

Google found a useful tips for me – Compacting the folder.

When you delete or move e-mails from a folder, Thunderbird and other e-mail programs simply hide them (and mark them as ready for physical deletion later on), and these hidden e-mails still actually remain in the folder. Even emptying the Trash does not physically delete them. These hidden e-mails are physically removed only when the folder is compacted. If you don't compact your mail folders periodically, they can grow very large, and erratic program behavior may occur.

Many e-mail users have never heard of compacting folders (not to be confused with compressing files). However, most e-mail programs use this approach to email storage and deletion. It improves performance by not requiring the email program to rewrite the entire Inbox or other folder every time you delete a single message. The difference is that most other email clients by default automatically compact the folder when a certain amount of space is wasted, whereas this has to be activated by the user in Thunderbird.

Writing An Effective Email

Everyone know how to write an email? But does anyone know how to write an effective[/tag] or good email? Personally, I don’t think I can write a good email. So how to write an effective email?

Below just to share about what I learn from the training recently.

Write an email with 5 elements of styles:

- Sincerity
- Simplicity
- Clarity
- Coherence
- Courtesy

Basic Email Rules:

- E mail only to those who have an interest in the subject matter.
- M make sure you respond promptly.
- A always check your content, grammar or spelling before sending.
- I include your relevant contact in your email.
- L learn to restrict to business mail during office hours.
